US--Supreme Court-Education-Admissions

Supreme Court to hear case on race in middle school admissions

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case about race in middle school admissions. This comes three years after it struck down affirmative action in college admissions. The case involves four selective middle schools in Montgomery County, Maryland. A parent group claims the district's policy boosts Black and Latino admissions while disadvantaging Asian American students. The court will decide if there's enough evidence of discrimination for the case to proceed. The court is expected to hear arguments in the coming months.

Activist Mahmoud Khalil asks Supreme Court to let US judges quickly reverse immigration detentions

SUMMARY: Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil has asked the Supreme Court to let federal judges quickly decide the legality of immigration-related detentions so individuals are not held for months or years without judicial oversight. Khalil filed papers with the high court on Monday challenging a recent ruling by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia. That court said federal judges should not consider challenges by people like Khalil until immigration judges have finished their consideration of each case. Khalil is a lawful permanent U.S. resident. He was detained by immigration authorities last year because he participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University in 2024. A federal judge ordered him released over three months later.

FBN--Ravens-Analysis

Baltimore's loss in Cleveland showed offensive limitations that only Jackson might be able to fix

SUMMARY: The Ravens beat Atlanta without Lamar Jackson, but a 13-10 loss at Cleveland on Sunday dropped Baltimore into a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North. The offense looked limited with Tyler Huntley at quarterback. Baltimore is 4-2, but Cleveland is the only team the Ravens have faced that currently has a winning record. Now the Ravens host Cincinnati, with Buffalo and Jacksonville on the schedule after that. So it’s fair to view Jackson’s health as a more urgent issue. He hurt his ankle in Week 4.

FBN--49ers-Evans

49ers WR Mike Evans has flare-up of Achilles tendinitis, leaves game vs. Commanders

SUMMARY: San Francisco 49ers receiver Mike Evans left Monday night’s win over the Washington Commanders with Achilles tendinitis. Evans had been bothered for the past week by the issue and didn’t practice leading up to the game. He has also been playing through two broken ribs but was active for the game after being listed as questionable. Coach Kyle Shanahan says the tendinitis that flared up during the game was the same issue that had been bothering Evans all week. He says he doesn't expect Evans to be sidelined in the long term.

Commanders WR Terry McLaurin suffers knee injury vs. 49ers that team fears is serious

SUMMARY: The Washington Commanders are concerned that wide receiver Terry McLaurin has a serious knee injury. McLaurin was taken off the field on a cart Monday night with the injury to his left knee. He was running a pattern in the first quarter against the San Francisco 49ers when he went down with the injury. His knee appeared to buckle as he tried to get free from cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. McLaurin stayed down while teammates knelt nearby before he was driven off the field. He was immediately ruled out for the game. Coach Dan Quinn says the injury “could be significant.”

SUMMARY: Brock Purdy threw a touchdown pass, Christian McCaffrey ran for two scores and the San Francisco 49ers held on to beat the Washington Commanders 23-17 for their sixth straight win to open the season. The Niners built a 20-point lead and held off the Commanders with two late defensive stops. Jayden Daniels threw two touchdown passes in the second half to cut a 20-point deficit to 23-17, but Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth-down pass to Treylon Burks near the goal line with 1:54 to play to preserve the lead. FBN--Jets-Analysis

Jets must fix their alarming 2-minute execution issues after they flare up again in loss to Patriots

SUMMARY: The New York Jets have struggled in the final two minutes of each half under head coach Aaron Glenn. Over two seasons, they’ve been outscored 119-49 in these crucial moments, the worst in the NFL. Glenn acknowledges the need for improvement in both offense and defense during these times. On Sunday, the Jets lost to the Patriots, with issues late in both the second and fourth quarters contributing to the defeat. Despite these challenges, the Jets’ running game remains strong, and wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. impressed in his return. Glenn aims to secure a division win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

HKN--Ducks-Travel Trouble

Anaheim Ducks get through a 15-hour travel day with NFL RedZone and some card games

SUMMARY: The Anaheim Ducks had a travel experience to forget trying to get to the New York area for their Eastern Conference road trip this week. The 15-hour ordeal involved changing airports and charter planes and plenty of time spent sitting on the tarmac. Hockey lifer coach Joel Quenneville watched football — a lot of it. Rookie Roger McQueen and some of the younger guys played cards. The Ducks quickly moved from being annoyed by the delays to not wanting to use them as an excuse. They hope it's a bonding experience that will bring them closer together as a team.

FBN--Giants-Analysis

Harbaugh says the Giants are 'honing in on a decision' at quarterback between McCarthy and Winston

SUMMARY: Coach John Harbaugh says the New York Giants are honing in on deciding whether Jameis Winston or J.J. McCarthy will start at quarterback in their next game Sunday at Houston. McCarthy replaced Winston early in the fourth quarter and led multiple scoring drives to get within seven points before losing to New Orleans. The timing of the bye week coming up after playing the Texans is part of the decision, along with Winston's familiarity with the offense compared to McCarthy still learning it since joining in a trade from Minnesota in late September.

HKN--Ducks-Rangers

Rangers beat the Ducks 5-2 to improve to 6-0-0 at home to start the season

SUMMARY: Sean Durzi scored 78 seconds in, Dylan Garand made 29 saves and the New York Rangers defeated the travel-weary Anaheim Ducks 5-2 to improve to 6-0-0 at home this fall. The Rangers did not pick up their sixth victory at Madison Square Garden last season until Jan. 26, their 23rd game there. They lost 27 of 41 at home on the way to missing the playoffs and finishing last in the Eastern Conference. HKN--Rangers-Undefeated Home Start

Rangers put last year's home woes behind them by winning their first six at MSG this season

SUMMARY: The New York Rangers' home woes from a year ago are a distant memory. They're 6-0-0 in their first six games at Madison Square Garden this fall to match the second-longest season-opening home winning streak in franchise history. It took until their 23rd game at MSG last season on Jan. 26 to pick up their sixth victory. They've scored first in every home game thus far, including a goal in the opening two minutes in three in a row. Sean Durzi joked that the Knicks' NBA championship banner night provided some extra motivation to beat Anaheim on Monday.

FBN--Disappearing Fullbacks

Old-school fullback position gets modern makeover for the few NFL teams that use it

SUMMARY: Connor Heyward embraces his role as a fullback with the Las Vegas Raiders. After four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Heyward chose to join the Raiders, where he can focus on fullback duties. This position is rare in modern football due to the rise of spread offenses. However, some teams, like the Raiders, are reviving it with a modern twist. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak values Heyward's versatility, using him in various roles, including special teams. The Raiders are among the few teams using fullbacks extensively, giving them a strategic edge against defenses unprepared for that style.

FBN--Giants-Harris Released

Giants are releasing running back Najee Harris, AP source says

SUMMARY: The New York Giants are releasing running back Najee Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the decision. Harris had just two carries for 4 yards in a 34-27 loss to New Orleans on Sunday that dropped the Giants to 3-2-1. The 28-year-old coming off a torn left Achilles tendon rushed for 99 yards in five games this season, an average of 3.2 yards a carry. Harris started against the Saints when coach John Harbaugh and his staff reduced Cam Skattebo's role after the second-year running back fumbled in overtime at Washington the previous week. It's unclear how the Giants plan to split the responsibilities this weekend at Houston among Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary.

FBN--Saints-Analysis

Saints look to take skid-ending effort at Giants overseas

SUMMARY: The New Orleans Saints have arrived in Paris with a more positive outlook. They left New York with just their second victory in six games this season. A 34-27 win over the Giants on Sunday stopped a three-game skid and provided a respite from a sense of desperation that had owner Gayle Benson expressing dissatisfaction last week. The Saints now have a 2-1 record on the road, where their only loss came by a point in overtime. Next, they’ll try to take a winning performance in the Big Apple into another in the City of Lights. They’ll serve as the “home” team against Pittsburgh this Sunday in what's also the NFL’s first scheduled regular-season game in France.

The Saints arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport Monday. In a virtual news conference, they addressed questions about the rioting that is making headlines and flooding social media. Steelers' belief in their massive rookie class is paying early dividends

SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Steelers large rookie class is making an immediate impact. Wide receiver Germie Bernard caught a season-high 11 passes in an overtime win over Tampa Bay, and cornerback Daylen Everette added his first career interception to help spark a second-half comeback. Bernard says team's 10 class of 2026 draftees are a tight-knit group committed to making an impact as quickly as possible. First-year coach Mike McCarthy says it's beneficial when young players can get involved early in the season because their roles are likely to expand later in the season.
