RNS-Jewish-Mindfulness

How Jewish mindfulness meditation became a mainstay in High Holiday services and beyond

SUMMARY: Across the country, Jewish congregations, schools and nonprofit organizations have embraced mindfulness meditation with a zeal of the recently converted. The practice of sitting in silence, paying attention to the breath and focusing on the present moment, has become pervasive across all the Jewish religious movements, even among the Orthodox. “When you find something that works and helps people to feel God and feel a sense of centeredness and be able to go inward and notice that they have a soul and a spiritual life, you just grab it,” said Rabbi Elliott Tepperman, rabbi of Bnai Keshet in Montclair, New Jersey.

US--Meat Recall

More than 160,000 pounds of meat bearing false USDA inspection labels recalled

SUMMARY: More than 83 tons of meat are being recalled across the country because the products were not properly inspected by federal authorities and were shipped out with false inspection stickers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that the nationwide recall impacts more than 167,000 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat produced by Star Meat Delivery Inc. of North Carolina. The USDA said the meat was produced before Sept. 22 and has fake inspection stickers bearing establishment number “EST. 1363.” So far, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or injuries. The company claims a fake USDA stamp was not used on the products.

US--NJ-Lieutenant-Gov-Misconduct

New Jersey governor’s showdown with her No. 2 escalates over his alleged inappropriate behavior

SUMMARY: New Jersey’s Democratic governor is working to sever ties with her own lieutenant governor after he was accused of inappropriate behavior with women. Gov. Mikie Sherrill has given Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell until the end of the day Friday to step down. Caldwell, a Methodist pastor and former president of Centenary University, has disputed the allegations and appears to be digging in. In New Jersey, a governor can’t simply fire the lieutenant governor, who oversees elections as secretary of state. Sherrill is looking to quickly end the scandal, which comes weeks ahead of midterm elections that will decide who controls Congress.

US--Elder Abuse Prevention-Audit

Weaknesses with Pa. aging department’s oversight could leave older adults at risk, audit finds

SUMMARY: An audit reveals significant weaknesses in the Pennsylvania Department of Aging's oversight of agencies tasked with preventing elder abuse. Released Wednesday, the audit highlights deficiencies that could leave older adults at risk. Auditor General Tim DeFoor's office found 10 issues in how the department monitors county-based agencies. The audit criticizes the department's new monitoring system for not assessing key areas, potentially inflating performance scores. The department disputes the findings, calling the audit report inaccurate and accusing the auditors of bias. DeFoor insists the findings are accurate and urges the department to address the issues. The audit echoes previous reports of failures in the system.

US--Energy-Power Grid

Energy Department will spend $2 billion to squeeze more electricity from the aging power grid

SUMMARY: The Energy Department says it will spend almost $2 billion to try to squeeze more electricity out of the nation’s aging and stressed power grid. President Donald Trump's administration is stepping up efforts to avoid blackouts amid skyrocketing energy demand spurred by artificial intelligence. The money will go toward 31 projects across 26 states that are expected to produce more than 23 gigawatts of additional electricity capacity — enough to power 16 million homes. Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke about the grant program Thursday in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Recipients include utilities, cooperatives and four state agencies. The state agencies — in Colorado, Indiana, Ohio and Oklahoma — were the biggest recipients, drawing at a total of $810 million.

Frank Reich says analytics backed Jets' failed fourth-and-1 shotgun run vs. Packers

SUMMARY: New York Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich defended his decision to use a shotgun formation on a run during a crucial fourth-and-1 play against Green Bay last Sunday. The Jets lost 20-17 in overtime and some fans questioned the call. Reich explained Thursday that analytics showed a 71% conversion rate for shotgun runs on fourth-and-1, compared to 67% for plays under center. He emphasized confidence in his play-calling despite the outcome. Reich also noted the Jets needed nearly a full yard, making a quarterback sneak less viable.
