These cases could reshape how Pa. treats users who are accused of supplying drugs in fatal overdoses
SUMMARY: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court is considering new legal protections for defendants accused of causing deadly overdoses by providing drugs. The court's decision could address criticisms that these prosecutions target drug users rather than dealers. Some justices are skeptical about their power to change the law, suggesting it might be a legislative issue. Pennsylvania is a leader in prosecuting these cases, with varying rates across counties. Critics argue that fear of long prison sentences discourages people from seeking help during overdoses. The court's ruling could impact how these cases are handled statewide, with a decision still pending.

Coroner releases details of infants who died amid growing Pennsylvania measles outbreak
SUMMARY: A Pennsylvania coroner confirms that the two measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania last month involved infants, and the virus itself caused one of the deaths. Lancaster County’s coroner, Dr. Stephen Diamantoni, said Wednesday that he told the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of his conclusions. CDC officials, however, haven't said whether they will count either death as measles-associated. The coroner says a boy died on Aug. 14 shortly after his birth of a ruptured spleen and tested positive for measles. A 6-week-old girl died Aug. 18 at her home. She was born with a genetic birth defect that left her highly vulnerable to an infection, and a measles infection killed her.

Sen. John Fetterman's isolation from Democrats grows stark in Pennsylvania
SUMMARY: Sen. John Fetterman is on shaky ground with Democrats in his home state of Pennsylvania. The senator's approval ratings with Democrats in the state have plunged, and some Democrats are openly talking about running against Fetterman in 2028. It all comes after Fetterman repeatedly criticized Democrats in media appearances while backing some of President Donald Trump's priorities. Fetterman has acknowledged his isolation from Democrats but has repeatedly said that he wouldn’t switch to become a Republican. Still, he made a video appearance at Wednesday night’s Republican Party convention in Dallas, praising GOP Sen. David McCormick and saying he’d work with Trump to “defend the steel way of life.”

Democratic Sen. Fetterman speaks at a GOP midterm convention, fueling party-switch fears
SUMMARY: Democratic Sen. John Fetterman has addressed the Republican midterm convention, escalating tensions with his party. His appearance is stirring fears among Democrats that he might switch parties after the midterms. Fetterman introduced Republican Sen. Dave McCormick in a video, calling him “a great American.” He criticized Democrats as extremists and expressed support for working with President Donald Trump. Fetterman said in a statement later Wednesday that he will not switch parties. He has been increasingly isolated from his party, supporting Israel’s war in Gaza and voting with Republicans on key issues. Democrats worry about his influence if they secure a narrow majority in the Senate.

Lamar Jackson will be under a microscope again as he tries to rebound from a nightmarish 2025
SUMMARY: Of all the top quarterbacks in Week 1, Lamar Jackson might be under the most scrutiny. It’s no exaggeration to suggest last season was the worst of Jackson’s pro career. A Baltimore team that had Super Bowl aspirations failed to make the playoffs. Jackson missed a few games with injuries, but that’s happened before. What was more concerning was how he looked when he played. Jackson’s completion percentage was his worst in three years. He was also sacked 36 times, an increase of 13 from 2024 despite playing fewer games. The two-time MVP rushed for only 349 yards. That was by far the lowest output of his career.

Daniel Jones is eager to get back on the field as Colts face Ravens in Sunday's season opener
SUMMARY: From the moment Indianapolis quarterback Daniel Jones had his torn right Achilles tendon repaired, the goal never wavered. He was going to start the season opener in the following season. On Sunday, Jones’ nearly nine-month journey back will end the way he envisioned — taking snaps on Week 1, his first game action since early December. Jones has been checking off the boxes, one by one, since suffering the injury Dec. 7 at Jacksonville. But he's about to face his biggest test yet — surviving the hits and stress of playing the position in game conditions.

Commanders' Jayden Daniels is ready to quiet the critics entering his third NFL season
SUMMARY: Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing second NFL season. Daniels led the Commanders to a 12-5 record and NFC championship game appearance as a rookie in 2024 but played just seven games last season as Washington won stumbled to five victories. Daniels and the Commanders face plenty of pressure entering the 2026 season. His durability has been questioned. And the offensive line in front of him has been average at best during training camp, especially after star left tackle Laremy Tunsil injured his left triceps.

Merrill homers twice and drives in 6 runs in the Padres' 9-2 victory over the Nationals
SUMMARY: Jackson Merrill homered twice, had a career-high six RBIs and fell a double short of a cycle to help the San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 9-2 on Wednesday after the hottest first-pitch temperature in Petco Park history at 95 degrees. The previous record was 93 on Sept. 10, 2015, in a game against the Colorado Rockies. Petco Park opened in 2004. Merrill tied his career high with 24 homers. Orioles put Alexander on injured list; hope Henderson avoids similar fate
SUMMARY: The Baltimore Orioles have placed versatile Blaze Alexander on the 10-day injured list and are hopeful that shortstop Gunnar Henderson can recover quickly from a knee injury that left him out of the starting lineup Wednesday night against Cleveland. Alexander was forced from Tuesday’s game against the Guardians with lower back spasms. His condition did not significantly improve by Wednesday, so the Orioles put him on the IL with lower back discomfort and recalled Jeremiah Jackson from Triple-A Norfolk. Cowboys have a pretty 'cool' way of tracking the heat as they settle for indoor practices
SUMMARY: The Dallas Cowboys are hiding from the Texas heat out of necessity. Practices are inside on artificial turf rather than outside on grass as the team would prefer now that the regular-season routine is finally here. Brian Schottenheimer isn’t sure how much a brutal summer still on full blast in September will have to ease up for the Cowboys to get back outside. Across the US, 'Friday night lights' provide a sense of community — and, for some, a way out
SUMMARY: Like many high schools across the country, Aliquippa football games are a cherished tradition, connecting the community's past and present. The Western Pennsylvania town comes together on Friday nights during the fall to support the home team. This tradition is part of a broader American experience where high school sports foster community spirit and personal growth. Despite changes over the years, the essence of teamwork and connection remains strong. For many, sports offer a path to college and new opportunities, while also preserving a sense of belonging and pride in their roots.
