Heavy rain leads to New Jersey store roof collapse as heat wave breaks
SUMMARY: Heavy rain and flooding are breaking a heat wave that gripped New York City and much of the Northeast last week. Flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey as storms moved through the area. Rain and storms broke the heat dome that settled last week. LaGuardia Airport set a record high of 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday. Officials in New Jersey are investigating at least 29 deaths that may be heat-related. Severe storms have left about 370,000 people without power.

Back for another season, Alex Ovechkin is noncommittal on whether this will be his last
SUMMARY: The NHL’s career leader in goals didn’t formally commit to returning in 2026-27 until last week. So it was perhaps no surprise that Alex Ovechkin remained noncommittal on whether this is going to be his swan song with the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin said his wife suggested he play “one more year, or maybe two years, I don’t know” — so if anyone was expecting him to announce a retirement tour for this season, that did not happen Monday. Ovechkin committed last week to returning this coming season.

MLB reduces Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli’s suspension from 7 games to 5
SUMMARY: Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli’s suspension for his role in last Tuesday’s brawl at Boston has been reduced on appeal from seven games to five. Major League Baseball made the announcement on Monday. Cavalli struck out Boston’s Willson Contreras looking in the fourth inning of an 8-1 Nationals victory. Cavalli shouted at Contreras, who threw his helmet and moved toward the mound. After they continued yelling at each other, both benches emptied. Contreras was ejected and also handed a seven-game suspension. He has appealed.

Congressional committee on China asks Wizards and Capitals owner to cut ties with Alibaba
SUMMARY: The owner of Washington’s NBA and NHL teams received a letter from the chair of the House Select Committee on China asking him to cut ties with Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant that has gone to court to dispute the Pentagon’s designation of the corporation as a “Chinese military company.” Congressman John Moolenaar, a Republican from Michigan, wrote to Ted Leonsis, and referenced the U.S. Defense Department's recent decision to designate Alibaba as a Chinese military company. Alibaba is suing to have the designation rescinded. Meanwhile, Moolenaar is urging Leonsis to cut ties with the tech giant by July 15.

Flames sign Simon Nemec to a 5-year, $36.25M contract after getting him from the Devils
SUMMARY: The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Simon Nemec to a five-year contract worth $36.25 million. Nemec will count $7.25 million against the salary cap through the 2030-31 NHL season. Calgary acquired his rights from New Jersey last month for three draft picks. Nemec has skated in 159 combined games in the league since the Devils took him with the second pick in the 2022 draft. New Jersey general manager Sunny Mehta denied that Nemec asked for a trade and said instead that everyone agreed it was better for the 22-year-old Slovak to get a fresh start elsewhere.

One Extraordinary Photo: Erling Haaland's header to help Norway advance
SUMMARY: Goals were hard to come by in the Norway-Brazil match. That is until Erling Haaland of Norway scored the first one of the game while being defended by Brazil’s Gabriel Magalhaes during Sunday's showdown. AP freelance photojournalist Pamela Smith says she was ready — and a little lucky. Smith's made her own luck with her preparation. She remained focused whenever there was a potential scoring opportunity so when she saw Haaland jump with the ball flying through the air, she held her shutter down to capture the moment just before other players started to run into the frame.

Brad Stevens says Jaylen Brown trade was about Celtics' salary cap and future flexibility
SUMMARY: Celtics president Brad Stevens says trading Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia was necessary for financial flexibility in the changing NBA landscape. Stevens acknowledged the emotional impact and said he understands fans' reactions. But Stevens said that devoting 70% of the team's salary cap to Brown's and Jayson Tatum's contracts worked against that. Still, team owner Bill Chisholm insisted there was no directive to cut costs, and said the focus remains on winning.

Phillies ace Sánchez calls poor outing 'crap,' can't pinpoint reason for his struggles
SUMMARY: Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez summed up one of the worse outings of his career with one word: crap. Sánchez could have used much stronger language after giving up a career-worst nine earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings in Monday’s 15-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Asked after the game if he could pinpoint something that led to the bad outing, the 29-year-old left-hander was lost for a cause. Sanchez gave up three of the Royals’ four home runs — all on his changeup, one of his signature pitches. Again, he had no answer as to why.

Royals slug 4 homers, tag Phillies ace Sánchez for career-worst 9 earned runs in 15-1 victory
SUMMARY: Salvador Perez, Luke Maile, Lane Thomas and Tyler Tolbert homered and the Kansas City Royals tagged Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez for a career-worst nine earned runs in a 15-1 win over Philadelphia. The Royals, who entered the game with the second-worst record in baseball at 35-54, scored in every inning and banged out a season-high 15 runs on 22 hits. Tyler Tolbert had his first career five-hit game, and the first by a Royals player since 2022. Sánchez’s previous high in earned runs allowed was seven. The 29-year-old left-hander gave up six runs in the first, matching his season worst, which came April 23 against the Chicago Cubs. Sánchez (10-4) allowed 12 hits and had a walk and one strikeout as his ERA increased from 2.00 to 2.62.

Former coach at Bucknell University charged in death of freshman football player
SUMMARY: A former strength and conditioning coach at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania has been charged in the death of a football player who collapsed during training. The attorney general’s office said Monday that in 2024 at the university in Pennsylvania, Mark Kulbis told Calvin “CJ” Dickey Jr. and other football players to do a rigorous series of exercises. Dickey passed out and was taken to the hospital. Dickey had sickle-cell trait, a medical condition that can increase the risk of serious injury or death following extreme exertion. Kulbis has been charged with felony aggravated hazing and misdemeanor counts of involuntary manslaughter, among other charges. His attorney did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

Kyle Lowry makes good on a promise: He signs with the Raptors so he can retire
SUMMARY: Kyle Lowry delivered on his final promise as a player: He long vowed to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors so he could retire as a member of that franchise. And on Tuesday, he made it happen. One of 12 players in NBA history to play 20 seasons in the league, Lowry announced he was signing with the Raptors and retiring, ending his career with the team that he helped lead to the 2019 NBA championship and in the city that he considers home. The Raptors revealed that his No. 7 jersey will be retired. More tributes are planned by the club in the coming months for the point guard from Philadelphia who became a Canadian icon even while winning an Olympic gold medal for the United States.
