US--Brooklyn Sewer Mystery

What it's like to go inside New York City's dank, dangerous, bug-filled sewers

SUMMARY: A former urban explorer says the most unpleasant part of exploring New York City’s sewer system was the cockroaches, not the rats, smells or ever-present dangers. Steven Duncan reflected this week on his years documenting the subterranean networks running under New York and other world cities after groups of people were captured on surveillance videos popping in and out of sewers in Brooklyn and Queens in recent days. Duncan believes the groups were likely traversing the large, 19th century sewer mains that run underneath parts of the city. Officials stress it’s not just illegal to enter the sewers but also extremely dangerous.

US--Justice Department-John Bolton

Ex-national security adviser John Bolton will plead guilty in classified information case: AP source

SUMMARY: Former Trump administration national security adviser John Bolton has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of retaining classified information under a deal with the Justice Department that could allow him to avoid prison time. That's according to a person familiar with the matter. The deal would resolve a criminal case filed in October that charged Bolton with 18 counts of either retaining or sharing diary-like notes with family members. Officials said the material contained classified information as he was preparing a memoir of his time in government. The person familiar with the matter insisted on anonymity to discuss a deal that hasn't been made public.

US--Immigration Protests-New Jersey

New Jersey police sergeant charged with stealing journalist's camera bag at immigration protest

SUMMARY: A New Jersey police sergeant has been charged with stealing $10,000 worth of camera equipment from a photojournalist. The state’s attorney general announced Thursday that Daryll Brown, a sergeant in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, was caught with the stolen gear. Photographer Angelina Katsanis left the bag unattended as she sought medical attention for a knee injury sustained while covering a protest outside an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday. It then went missing. But she was able to track the device to Brown's home through an Airtag. An attorney for Brown could not be reached.

US--Plane Hits Light Pole

Copilot of United jet that struck a light pole realized flight was low, but not in time, report says

SUMMARY: Federal investigators have released their initial report on a jet that struck a truck on a highway while landing at a New Jersey airport. The National Transportation Safety Board on Thursday said the copilot had recognized the plane were coming in low, but didn’t realize it in time to abort the landing attempt. The United Airlines passenger jet had been coming in for a landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3 when it came dangerously close to disaster. The truck driver was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. The Boeing 767 was able to land safely. None of the more than 200 people on the plane were hurt.

US-Child Death Reviews-Pennsylvania

Half of child deaths left unreviewed in Pa. since 2020 as counties struggle with 'unfunded mandate'

SUMMARY: Many Pennsylvania counties are failing to review the death of every child in their area, despite a 2008 state law that requires them to do so. Reports shared with Spotlight PA by the Pennsylvania Department of Health show that since 2020, roughly half of childhood deaths statewide have not been reviewed. Those lapses are especially prominent in rural counties, where local teams are more likely to falter or not exist. The problem, advocates and program participants say, is a lack of both state assistance in collecting data and time for volunteers to run the local panels. Gov. Josh Shapiro wants the legislature to approve $2.5 million to improve this work, but it’s unclear if the request will be considered a priority this year.

Orioles score 6 runs in the 1st inning to beat the Red Sox 8-2

SUMMARY: Coby Mayo hit a bases-clearing double in a six-run first inning to help the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 8-2. Taylor Ward had three hits including a leadoff double and an RBI single in that first inning, which tied the Orioles’ most runs in a single frame this season. Adley Rutschman extended his on-base streak to 15 games on Thursday. That's one shy of his longest career streak. Trevor Rogers carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and surrendered one run while striking out five. Brayan Bello continued to struggle as a starter, allowing seven hits and eight runs in five innings.

SOC--WCup-Brazil-Neymar

Brazil says Neymar, sidelined by a calf injury, isn't traveling for an exhibition game vs. Egypt

SUMMARY: Neymar is not traveling to Cleveland with Brazil's World Cup team for its exhibition tuneup against Egypt. The Brazilian Football Confederation said the 34-year-old forward would remain in New Jersey to undergo treatment. The match against Egypt is on Saturday. The team doctor said last week that Neymar was expected to be sidelined two to three weeks because of a calf injury. Brazil's opening game at the World Cup is June 13 against Morocco in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Picking Neymar for the 26-player roster was considered a risk because of his health, but he is Brazil's all-time leading goal scorer with 79.

BKN--NBA Finals-Knicks Fans

New York City is in a Knicks frenzy for its beloved team's 1st NBA Finals in 27 years

SUMMARY: From Bay Ridge to the Bronx and beyond, the Big Apple has gone nuts for the New York Knicks making their first NBA Finals appearance in 27 years. It's evident in the soaring ticket prices to fans filling Madison Square Garden with thousands more lining the streets outside to watch the Knicks' 105-95 victory at San Antonio in Game 1 of the series. Bars in Brooklyn overflowed and “Knicks in Four” chants erupted shortly after midnight following the win. Similar scenes were captured at a free watch party in Central Park, and across the five boroughs.

BBO--Yankees-Judge

Yankees star Aaron Judge sidelined indefinitely with a rib stress fracture

SUMMARY: New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge will be sidelined indefinitely with a stress fracture of one of his ribs, the team announced Thursday night. The three-time AL MVP was out of the lineup earlier in the day for a third straight game and the Yankees were awaiting clarity about what they said was a bone bruise in one of the slugger’s right ribs that is causing right shoulder pain. The team later announced Judge was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side and will need to rest and have limited activity. He will be re-evaluated after having additional imaging in about four to six weeks. The Yankees said Judge is expected to return “at some point this season.”

BKN--NBA Finals-Spurs Nuns

The superfans known as the 'Spurs Nuns' aiming to bring divine intervention to the NBA Finals

SUMMARY: Victor Wembanyama stepped off the court for a moment before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, accepted greetings from a handful of well-wishers in San Antonio Spurs jerseys, then bowed his head to join them in a quick prayer. They’re the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. On game nights, they’re called the Spurs Nuns. New York has Ben Stiller, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan among its superfans; San Antonio has a group of nuns who wear Spurs jerseys over their habits. It’s a relationship that goes back at least 20 years or so, and to the sisters it makes perfect sense.

Some of the most dedicated World Cup fans skipping this year's tournament, citing costs and politics

SUMMARY: The 2026 World Cup has drawn intense criticism from globe-trotting fans who over the years have helped define the tournament's festive atmosphere. Some of them say one reason for their decision is ticket prices are far higher than ever before and that it doesn't help that FIFA is actively encouraging unlimited resale markups while taking a 30% cut. Transportation between host cities is also a significant financial challenge, while strict U.S. visa requirements are affecting fans from numerous countries. Others says they are skipping the tournament in protest against President Donald Trump's policies. It could all point to a World Cup that is missing members of a key group of traveling supporters who have long given the tournament its character.
