California will lead the nation in providing free diapers to newborns at dozens of hospitals
SUMMARY: California will become the first state in the nation to provide infants with hundreds of free diapers before they leave hospitals after birth. Officials say the goal is to ease the financial burden on families welcoming newborns in the notoriously costly state. The state will provide 400 diapers to each newborn through participating hospitals. The program in its first year will be limited to hospitals largely serving low-income patients, and then it will expand statewide after that. It comes two years after Tennessee and Delaware became the first states to offer free diapers to families enrolled in their state's Medicaid programs.

Judge to rule Friday whether Charlie Kirk murder case can be filmed, photographed
SUMMARY: A Utah judge is set to decide if news outlets can continue to film, photograph and livestream the murder case against the man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The hearing is to be held Friday. Tyler Robinson’s attorneys argue he can’t get a fair trial if news outlets stream the proceedings. Media organizations, prosecutors and Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, want the court to allow cameras. They say transparency is the best way to guard against conspiracy theories that have circulated since Kirk was assassinated Sept. 10 while addressing thousands of students at Utah Valley University in Orem. State District Judge Tony Graf already has tightened his rules for cameras once during court hearings for Robinson.

Lucas Herbert with a 64 leads LIV Golf Virginia. Rahm and DeChambeau are 5 behind
SUMMARY: Lucas Herbert leads LIV Golf Virginia by two shots after opening with a 64. Herbert had been feeling sick earlier in the week and so Thursday was the first time he had seen the front nine at Trump National. It didn't seem to bother him. Herbert made an eagle and three birdies in a row on that side. He says he simply followed the directions of his caddie on where to hit it. Marc Leishman, Sergio Garcia, Sebastian Munoz and Tyrrell Hatton each shot a 66 and were tied for second. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau were five behind after shooting 69s.

Grisham leads Yankees over Rangers 9-2 for 16th win in 19 games but Domínguez hurt hitting wall
SUMMARY: Trent Grisham hit a go-ahead, three-run double in a six-run sixth inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Texas 9-2 for their 16th win in 19 games on an afternoon the Rangers misplayed four balls in a difficult sun. Yankees left fielder Jasson Domínguez left in a cart after crashing into the wall while catching Brandon Nimmo’s drive leading off the first. After the game, the Yankees said Domínguez has a low grade AC sprain of his left shoulder, and will be put on the injured list. Concussion tests thus far were negative. New Jersey lowers $150 train fare for World Cup to $105 amid outcry
SUMMARY: The steep cost to ride the train to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium for the upcoming World Cup just got a little cheaper. New Jersey Transit is reducing a planned $150 round-trip fare from all stations to the stadium in East Rutherford to $105. That’s still far higher than the roughly $13 a round-trip ticket from Manhattan’s Penn Station to the stadium typically costs. Gov. Mikie Sherrill says she directed the transit agency to seek private and non-taxpayer dollars to reduce the planned fare hike. State officials say the upcharge on trains headed to the stadium was necessary to help offset the agency’s costs.

Andrea Lee has a big finish for a 66 to the lead the Mizuho Americas Open
SUMMARY: Andrea Lee was expecting major conditions at the Mizuho Americas Open. What she didn't see coming was four birdies on her last five holes for a 66. That gives her a one-shot lead over Jeeno Thitikul and Lydia Open at tough Mountain Ridge. Only nine players broke 70 in the opening round under a moderate breeze and slightly rain-softened greens. Lee says she was trying to keep it in play and avoid bogeys and it worked well. The tournament is hosted by Michelle Wie-West who played for the first time in three years. It didn't go well. She shot 82.

Detroit is up 2-0 on Cleveland, Oklahoma City is up 2-0 on the Los Angeles Lakers, New York is up 2-0 on Philadelphia and San Antonio got a 1-1 split with Minnesota. In other words, games went largely as seedings suggested they would. That wasn’t the case last season, when home teams went 2-6 in Games 1 and 2 of the conference semifinals.
