Rutgers University withdraws invite to a graduation speaker over his criticism of Israel
SUMMARY: Rutgers University has canceled a planned graduation speech by business leader Rami Elghandour after students raised concerns about his criticism of Israel on social media. Elghandour is the CEO of biotech company Arcellx and a Rutgers alumnus. He was set to speak at the School of Engineering's May 15 convocation, but the university rescinded his invitation after learning some students would skip the ceremony because of his social media posts. A Rutgers spokesperson confirmed that the posts focused on Israel but didn't specify further. Elghandour frequently posts on social media about violence in Gaza and the West Bank. He has accused Israel of war crimes and praised pro-Palestinian protesters.

At 250, the Declaration of Independence Still Sparks Hard Questions in Class
SUMMARY: History teachers across the U.S. are working to make the nation's founding documents relevant as the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches. Teachers like Karalee Wong Nakatsuka and Matthew Vriesman encourage students to question who the Declaration was originally for and who it serves now. They face challenges in a politically divided nation where teaching civics can lead to backlash. Despite pressures, many educators prioritize teaching the Revolutionary period. They aim to foster "historical empathy" by focusing on stories of everyday people. Students are encouraged to explore multiple perspectives and understand the complexities of history.

Chief Justice John Roberts says Supreme Court is not political
SUMMARY: Chief Justice John Roberts says Supreme Court justices are not “political actors.” He says justices are making decisions based on the law, not their personal policy preferences. His remarks Wednesday to a conference of judges and lawyers in Pennsylvania come a week after the court handed down a ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act. The high court has also expanded gun rights and overturned the constitutional right to abortion in recent years. Public confidence in the Supreme Court is at a low point.

Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo is not running in the Preakness
SUMMARY: Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will not run in the Preakness Stakes next weekend. Trainer Cherie DeVaux announced the plan to skip the Preakness and set sights on the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. Golden Tempo is the third Derby winner in the past five years not to be entered in the Preakness. For various reasons, it is the sixth time in eight years the Preakness will happen with no chance of a Triple Crown on the line. American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018 are the only horses to sweep all three races over the past four decades.

He threw 83 pitches for Triple-A Scranton at Worcester on Tuesday. Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich says QB Geno Smith is a 'perfect' fit
SUMMARY: Frank Reich’s return to the NFL had to be the right fit, and he believes he’s found that with the New York Jets. It helped that Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is also Reich’s former teammate, but the opportunity to turn a team around was especially appealing to the team’s new offensive coordinator. Quarterback Geno Smith, coming off a disappointing season with the Las Vegas Raiders, is poised to be Justin Fields’ successor after the Jets traded for him in March. “I think he fits perfect,” Reich said.

Knicks without key backup Mitchell Robinson in Game 2 because of an illness
SUMMARY: Mitchell Robinson won’t play for the New York Knicks on Wednesday night in Game 2 against Philadelphia because of an illness, leaving each team without a center. The 76ers ruled Joel Embiid out earlier Wednesday with a sprained right ankle and a sore right hip. The Knicks added their backup center to the injury report later in the day and said he wouldn’t play shortly before the start of the game. Jalen Brunson helps the Knicks take a 2-0 lead over the 76ers with a 108-102 victory
SUMMARY: Jalen Brunson scored 26 points and helped New York seize control of a close game after a run of blowouts, leading the Knicks to a 108-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers for a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Playing without the injured Joel Embiid, the 76ers put up a far better fight than in the Knicks’ 137-98 romp in Game 1. The game featured 25 lead changes, 14 ties and neither team led by more than seven points. Eovaldi shuts down streaking Yankees again as Rangers win 6-1 to stop slide
SUMMARY: Nathan Eovaldi cooled off the New York Yankees for the second time in eight days, and the Texas Rangers got early home runs from Corey Seager and Evan Carter in a 6-1 victory. Aaron Judge hit his major league-high 15th homer for the Yankees, who had won five straight games and 15 of 17. But right-hander Will Warren was tagged for six runs while throwing 90 pitches over four innings, a rare clunker for a New York rotation that began the day leading the majors with a 2.77 ERA. Yankees expect Rodón back Sunday, but Rice still sidelined with bruised hand
SUMMARY: Carlos Rodón is expected to rejoin the New York Yankees’ rotation Sunday in Milwaukee, but first baseman Ben Rice remained out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive game Wednesday night with a bruised left hand. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says it doesn’t appear Rice will need to go on the injured list. The slugger got hurt catching a low pickoff throw during Sunday’s win over Baltimore and left the game. Paul Goldschmidt started at first base again versus Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. The left-handed-hitting Rice was batting .343 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs, and leading the majors in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. Glass cleaner: Karl-Anthony Towns dislodges ball behind backboard after Andre Drummond can't
SUMMARY: When the ball got stuck behind the basket in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, the Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns proved that if you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. Nathan Eovaldi silences the scorching Yankees for a second time in 8 days
SUMMARY: Nathan Eovaldi certainly has the New York Yankees’ number — even if nobody else does lately. The veteran right-hander cooled off Aaron Judge & Co. for the second time in eight days, pitching eight masterful innings for the Texas Rangers in their 6-1 victory. The 36-year-old Eovaldi, a two-time All-Star who pitched for the Yankees from 2015-16, struck out a season-best eight and walked none, firing 72 of his 101 pitches for strikes. He allowed just three hits after tossing seven innings of four-hit ball in a 3-0 win over New York on April 29 at home. A Knicks takeover in Philadelphia? Embiid’s plea to 76ers fans meets the resale market for Game 3
SUMMARY: Joel Embiid has urged 76ers fans not to sell their playoff tickets to Knicks supporters. The Sixers need Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP, who missed Game 2 against the Knicks due to injuries. The Knicks lead the series 2-0, with Games 3 and 4 in Philadelphia on Friday and Sunday. Trailing 2-0 in series, Flyers hope return home can fuel comeback against Hurricanes
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia Flyers turned tenuous postseason hopes into a fashion statement when they wore T-shirts with “3.8%” on the sleeve to start their playoff run — a nod to their chances in March, per an NHL analytics and prediction platform. Might be time for a new addition — courtesy of updated math — to their wardrobe. When Travis Konecny missed on a breakaway in overtime of a Game 2 loss at Carolina, the Flyers lost a chance to earn a split on the road. The Flyers are the decided underdog headed into Game 3 Thursday against a Hurricanes team that remains unbeaten in the NHL playoffs, thanks two impressive home wins to open the second-round series.

Does the NHL need more replay reviews for penalties and scrums or would they slow the game?
SUMMARY: Count Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour as a supporter of using more replay reviews to help on-ice officials in the NHL playoffs. Brind'Amour's Hurricanes are the top seed in the Eastern Conference and facing the Philadelphia Flyers in Round 2. Brind'Amour said the league has “the best” officials but adds they could “use a little hand” with replay assistance in sorting through scrums and other calls sold by embellishment.
