A United jet narrowly avoided catastrophe when it struck a truck near Newark airport during landing
SUMMARY: A United Airlines jet came dangerously close to disaster Sunday when it hit a semitrailer truck and a light pole on the New Jersey turnpike as it came into land at Newark Liberty International Airport. Safety expert Steve Arroyo says that a catastrophe was avoided by mere feet. He said landing on the shorter runway at Newark is one of the most challenging approaches in the world, but it can be done safely as long as pilots plan for it and use their navigational aids. But the margin for error is extremely low. Federal investigators arrived Monday to interview the crew.

Pennsylvania sues AI company, saying its chatbots illegally hold themselves out as licensed doctors
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania has sued an artificial intelligence chatbot maker, saying its chatbots illegally hold themselves out as doctors and deceive the system’s users into thinking they're getting medical advice from a licensed professional. The lawsuit, filed Friday, asks a state court to order Character Technologies Inc., the company behind Character.AI, to stop its chatbots “from engaging in the unlawful practice of medicine and surgery.” The lawsuit says an investigator from a state agency found a character that described itself as a “doctor of psychiatry” who's licensed in Pennsylvania. Character.AI says it posts disclaimers to inform users that characters on its website aren't real people and that everything they say “should be treated as fiction."

Five Things to Know About Largest Cell Phone Ban Study
SUMMARY: A large study on school cell phone bans has found mixed results. Teachers report fewer distractions when students lock phones away, but there's little evidence of improved academic achievement or behavior. The study involved data from about 4,600 schools and was published by the National Bureau of Economic Research. It shows that phone usage drops significantly with bans, but discipline issues initially rise before improving. Academic gains are minimal, and attendance and bullying remain largely unaffected. Researchers suggest the bans reduce phone use, which could eventually enhance learning. They emphasize patience and persistence in managing digital devices in schools.

Judge wants new Bronx tradition: Sterling's voice booming “Theee Yankees win!" before Sinatra song
SUMMARY: Aaron Judge hopes John Sterling's iconic call, “Ballgame over! Yankees win! Theee Yankees win!” becomes a new tradition at Yankee Stadium. Judge shared this after the Yankees defeated Baltimore 12-1, completing a four-game sweep on the day of Sterling's death at age 87. Sterling, who called games from 1989 to 2024, was honored with a pregame tribute — and then his familiar call that punctuated Yankees wins was played over the ballpark's public-address system following the final out. Judge hit his 14th homer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the eighth. Yankees manager Aaron Boone also supports the idea of Sterling's call becoming part of the victory routine.

PGA Tour winter schedule for 2027 looks like this year. The mystery is Florida
SUMMARY: Whatever big changes are coming to the PGA Tour probably won't be ready until 2028. That much is clear by tournaments early in the season already announcing their dates for 2027. But the mystery in all this is Florida, particularly after the lukewarm return of Doral. It used to be a key part of the tour schedule. But when held the first weekend in May against a Formula 1 race, the crowd was thin for the Cadillac Championship. In other golf news, Nelly Korda shares a few interesting tidbits during appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” She shares how her father saying “Coca-Cola” helped her tempo as a kid.
