Latino leaders surge into local office as Trump-era attacks fuel new urgency
SUMMARY: Latino leaders are gaining ground in U.S. politics despite ongoing challenges. Experts say grassroots organizing and attacks on Latino communities have fueled this rise. Lancaster, Pennsylvania, recently elected Jaime Arroyo as its first Latino mayor. Other cities — in Iowa and Georgia — have also seen historic Latino appointments. Clara Martinez and Deyanira Nevarez Martinez made Lansing, Michigan, the first U.S. city with a Latino-majority council. Local representation is seen as crucial for change. Latino leadership is also growing at state and federal levels, with a record number of Latinas in state legislatures. This trend is expected to continue.

The Mets, Red Sox and Phillies aren't out -- but they're very much down
SUMMARY: Alex Cora was fired as manager of the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. That news could have come from any of three major markets. The Red Sox actually took two of three at Baltimore, but they’re still in last place in their division at 11-17. The New York Mets have been even worse, scoring one run Sunday while getting swept in a home doubleheader against lowly Colorado. The Mets have lost 15 of 17 to fall to 9-19. And they actually have company in the NL East cellar. That's because the Philadelphia Phillies have dropped 11 of 12 and have the same 9-19 record.

Embiid’s gutsy return after appendectomy falls flat as Celtics rout 76ers for 3-1 series lead

Joel Embiid made a gutsy return from an appendectomy. The 76ers are still in trouble against Boston
SUMMARY: Joel Embiid thought he had a stomach bug during the Philadelphia 76ers' road trip in Texas. It turned out to be appendicitis, leading to an appendectomy on April 9. Embiid missed key games, including the Sixers' first three games in their first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics. He returned 17 days after surgery, scoring 26 points in a 128-96 loss on Sunday. The Sixers trail the series 3-1. Despite Embiid's efforts, the team struggled, with Boston dominating in rebounds and 3-pointers. Coach Nick Nurse and team president Daryl Morey face pressure as the Sixers aim to recover in the series.
