DHS pauses new immigrant warehouse purchases amid review of Noem-era contracts
SUMMARY: Homeland Security is pausing plans to buy new warehouses for immigrant detention as it reviews contracts signed under former secretary Kristi Noem. A senior Homeland Security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, told the Associated Press that the department is also rechecking warehouse deals it has already made. The news comes just a week after Sen. Markwayne Mullin took over the department from Noem. Mullin inherits a big push to expand detention space. But the plan to buy large-scale facilities to house immigrants drew sharp local backlash. Communities raised moral concerns and worries about the strain on the sewer and water systems. Homeland Security has bought 11 warehouses so far.

Bruce Springsteen brings 'Streets of Minneapolis' home to launch a political US tour
SUMMARY: Bruce Springsteen returns Tuesday to the “Streets of Minneapolis.” After honoring its residents in song for their courage in standing up against the federal immigration crackdown, he’s using the city to launch his latest U.S. tour. The New Jersey rocker released “Streets of Minneapolis” amid the nationwide outpouring over the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal officers. His tour will next head to other cities that were sites of immigration crackdowns. It ends May 27 in Washington, D.C., where he says he’ll have a few choice words for the White House.

Amsterdam celebrates 25 years since the world's first same-sex weddings
SUMMARY: Amsterdam is marking 25 years since the world's first gay marriages were celebrated in the Netherlands. Three couples married at City Hall on Wednesday just after midnight, led in a ceremony by Mayor Femke Halsema. More than 40 countries now allow same-sex marriages. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who is gay, says the milestone inspired him as a teenager. The LGBTQ movement is facing challenges elsewhere. Advocates cite new efforts in some U.S. states to challenge marriage equality and rising hostility toward LGBTQ+ people in parts of Africa.

Systems that let drivers take their hands off the wheel don't improve safety, NTSB head says
SUMMARY: The head of the National Transportation Safety Board says the systems that allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel are convenient but don’t improve safety because people who use them often pay less attention to the road. Chair Jennifer Homendy said at the outset of a hearing on the NTSB’s investigation of two fatal crashes involving Ford’s Blue Cruise system that drivers with automated systems engaged are much more likely than other drivers to focus on their cellphones or infotainment screens. Automakers emphasize that partially automated driving systems aren't designed to replace the human drivers, who have to be ready to take control at any time. But Homendy says automakers are marketing the systems as safety improvements.

Judge says Penn must turn over information about Jewish employees in US discrimination probe
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ordered the University of Pennsylvania to hand over records about Jewish employees on campus to a federal agency as part of an investigation into antisemitic discrimination. But the judge said Tuesday the school did not have to reveal any employee’s affiliation with a specific group. U.S. District Judge Gerald Pappert said employees can refuse to take part in the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigation but the agency “needs the opportunity to talk to them directly to learn if they have evidence of discrimination.” He mostly upheld a subpoena but said Penn does not have to disclose any worker’s affiliation with a Jewish-related organization.

Hershey says it will shift back to classic recipe for all Reese's products after criticism
SUMMARY: Hershey said Wednesday it will use classic recipes for all Reese’s products starting next year. The change comes after the grandson of Reese’s founder criticized the company for shifting to cheaper ingredients. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have always been made with real milk chocolate or dark chocolate and peanut butter. But a small portion of Hershey’s and Reese’s products, like mini Easter eggs, are now made with a coating that contains less chocolate. Hershey said that in 2027, it will shift those products to “their classic milk chocolate and dark chocolate recipes.” It will also be transitioning to natural colors in its sweets next year.
