Trump pays his respects in Delaware to 6 US service members killed in the Middle East
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump was present as the remains of six U.S. service members returned from the Middle East to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The crew members of an Air Force refueling aircraft were killed last week when the plane crashed over friendly territory in western Iraq while supporting operations against Iran. They were from Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Washington state. Wednesday's visit was the second time this month the Republican president has participated in the dignified transfer of service members. The dignified transfer was closed to news media coverage at the request of the families in accordance with military policy.

Luigi Mangione's lawyers seek to delay his state and federal trials
SUMMARY: Luigi Mangione’s lawyers have asked a judge to postpone his federal trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson until early next year and say they will seek to have his state murder trial delayed until September. In a Wednesday letter to U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett, Mangione’s lawyers said the current schedule — the state trial in June and the federal trial in September — puts him “in the position of needing to prepare for two complicated and serious trials at the same time.” They asked Garnett to delay the federal trial until January 2027 so that they can then have an opportunity to ask to move the state trial from June 8 to Sept. 8.

Judge throws prosecutor out of court and orders leaders of NJ’s US Attorney’s office to testify
SUMMARY: A judge threw a government attorney out of a hearing and ordered the three officials in charge of New Jersey’s U.S. Attorney’s office to answer his questions under oath. U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi was vexed by the Justice Department’s chaotic oversight of federal prosecutions in the state. Quraishi lit into prosecutors after another judge ruled last week that the Trump administration’s decision to replace interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba with a trio of officials was another violation of the Constitution’s Appointments Clause, which requires Senate confirmation. The officials, Philip Lamparello, Jordan Fox and Ari Fontecchio, have remained in charge pending an appeal.

Pennsylvania regulators seek $2.6 million in penalties for deadly 2023 chocolate factory explosion
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania regulators are seeking $2.6 million in penalties from UGI because of a gas leak and deadly explosion at a chocolate factory. The state Public Utility Commission on Wednesday asked an administrative law judge to issue the fines. Regulators argue UGI’s gas distribution equipment serving R.M. Palmer Co. in West Reading violates state and federal rules. The March 2023 blast killed seven workers and injured 10 people. It destroyed a factory building and a nearby apartment building. UGI is calling the explosion a heartbreaking tragedy and expressing sympathy for the victims’ families, people in West Reading and others who were affected.

Ovechkin scores his 922nd goal and Hutson scores in his debut as the Caps beat the Senators 4-1
SUMMARY: Alex Ovechkin scored his 922nd goal and Cole Hutson scored his first to lead the Washington Capitals past the Ottawa Senators, 4-1. Ovechkin is a goal shy of 1,000 — if his 77 postseason tallies are included. The Capitals are still six points out of a playoff spot with time running out, but this was an encouraging night for the franchise. Hutson made his NHL debut less than a week after the end of his season at Boston University, and the 19-year-old defenseman showed off his smooth skating and stickhandling throughout the night, finally scoring into an empty net with 25.7 seconds remaining. Tim Stutzle had Ottawa's lone goal.

Defenseman Cole Hutson impresses in his NHL debut, then scores at the end for the Capitals
SUMMARY: Cole Hutson scored his first NHL goal with 25.7 seconds left in his debut. It capped a 4-1 win for the Washington Capitals over the Ottawa Senators. The 19-year-old Hutson was in the starting lineup less than a week after his college season at Boston University ended. His goal Wednesday night came into an empty net. The Capitals drafted Hutson in the second round in 2024, and his potential arrival made it a little more palatable to trade veteran blueliner John Carlson at the deadline.

The Warriors know they're headed back to the play-in tournament; other teams might think the same
SUMMARY: Golden State coach Steve Kerr can do the math. He knows the Warriors are headed to the play-in tournament. The Warriors have 13 games left in the regular season and their loss in Boston on Wednesday night left them 8 1/2 games out of sixth place and the final guaranteed playoff spot in the Western Conference. That said, they’re also 8 1/2 games ahead of 11th place.
