Trump will go to Delaware for the dignified transfer of the 2 National Guard members killed in Syria
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump will go to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday for a dignified transfer for the two Iowa National Guard members killed in an attack in the Syrian desert. The guardsmen killed Saturday were 25-year-old Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, of Des Moines, and 29-year-old Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, of Marshalltown. Both were members of the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment. A U.S. civilian working as an interpreter, identified Tuesday as Ayad Mansoor Sakat of Macomb, Michigan, was also killed. The ritual honoring U.S. service members killed in action is one of the most solemn duties undertaken by the commander in chief.

Maryland to consider slavery reparations after Gov. Wes Moore's veto is overridden
SUMMARY: Maryland will create a commission to study potential slavery reparations in the state, after lawmakers overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Wes Moore. The General Assembly voted in a brief special session Tuesday to override a veto by the nation's only Black governor currently in office. Moore had disappointed many lawmakers in the heavily Democratic state when he vetoed the legislation in May. Moore said now isn't the time for another study, and called for delivering results instead. But Democrats who control both chambers of the legislature felt the commission was needed to better examine how to do that.

Trump will witness the dignified transfer for 2 National Guard members killed in Syria
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is going to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to witness the dignified transfer for two Iowa National Guard members who were killed in an attack in Syria. The ritual Wednesday is in honor of U.S. service members killed in action. Trump traveled to Dover several times in his first term as president. He once described this duty as “the toughest thing I have to do” as president. The Army says that Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard of Iowa died in the attack Saturday. They were among hundreds of U.S. troops deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting the Islamic State group.

2 big rail unions oppose $85B Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger over safety and cost concerns
SUMMARY: The proposed $85 billion merger of the Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern railroads has lost the support of two unions that represent more than half their workers. The unions representing engineers and maintenance workers worry the deal will jeopardize safety and jobs, and lead to higher shipping rates and consumer prices. They are now among the most prominent critics of this deal. But the deal does have the support of the nation’s largest rail union that represents conductors and hundreds of individual shippers. The U.S. Surface Transportation Board will weigh the opinions of all stakeholders to determine if the merger is in the public interest.

Republicans defy Speaker Johnson to force House vote on extending ACA subsidies
SUMMARY: Four centrist Republicans have broken with their party's leadership over health care. They've signed onto a Democratic-led petition that will force a House vote on extending for three years an enhanced pandemic-era subsidy that lowers health insurance costs for millions of Americans. The stunning move Wednesday comes after House Republican leaders pushed ahead with a health bill that doesn't address the soaring monthly premiums coming for those with insurance through the Affordable Care Act. A House vote on the subsidies could come as soon as January. Even if it passed, it would face an arduous climb in the Republican-led Senate.

The switch-hitter gives them a potential replacement for All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso, who signed with Baltimore as a free agent. The 32-year-old Polanco batted .265 with 26 home runs, 78 RBIs, 30 doubles and an .821 OPS in 138 games for Seattle last season, his second with the Mariners following a decade with the Twins.

ACC's shift to new football scheduling model will have 12 of 17 teams playing 9 league games in 2026
SUMMARY: The Atlantic Coast Conference’s transition to a nine-game football schedule will feature 12 of 17 football-playing members playing nine games next fall. The remaining five will stay at eight. The league released details Tuesday. Next year will operate as a bridge to accommodate conference games already on the books. The goal is to have 16 of 17 teams playing nine football games by 2027. The league's move to a nine-game schedule aligns with Power Four peers.
