US--Election 2025-AP Poll-Trump Factor

Tuesday’s races were a quiet rebuke of Trump for many voters, AP Voter Poll finds

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump wasn’t on the ballot in Tuesday’s elections, but many voters in key races made their choice in opposition to him or considered him to be irrelevant, according to the AP Voter Poll. The trend that played out in the governor races in New Jersey and Virginia, the mayoral contest in New York City and a California proposition to redraw congressional districts. In both Virginia and New Jersey, about half of voters said Trump was “not a factor” in their votes for governor. Trump weighed more heavily on the minds of California voters, who voted on a proposition to determine whether to redistrict the state’s congressional seats in favor of Democrats.

US--Election 2025-New Jersey Governor

Sherrill says she has a mandate as New Jersey's next governor and will focus on affordability

SUMMARY: Mikie Sherrill says she believes she has a mandate as New Jersey's governor-elect to fulfill campaign promises of making the state more affordable. And for now, the Democrat is dialing back on her criticism of Republican President Donald Trump. The congresswoman is getting to work setting up her new administration and she met with Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday as they discussed the transition. Sherrill says she's focused on affordability “because my communities are focused on affordability.” She's promised to use an executive order to freeze monthly electricity bills and wants to expand a program for first-time homebuyers.

CA--California-Online Privacy

California legislation could lead to better online privacy nationwide

SUMMARY: A new California law that requires web browsers to allow users to block all websites from sharing or selling their personal information could end up setting a standard for the whole country. Emory Roane is with the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, which pushed for the legislation. Roane says it will likely be easier for companies to put the service in place for the entire country, rather than just for California users. Mozilla's Firefox already has a setting that allows users to tell websites not to sell or share your data. Some advocates say they are going to keep pushing to expand privacy preferences for things such as connected smart devices and vehicles.

US--Election 2025-Democrats

Democrats are hopeful again. But unresolved questions remain about party's path forward

SUMMARY: Democrats are hopeful again. Party leaders on Wednesday celebrated big wins up and down the ballot across deep-blue New York and California to swing-states Georgia, Pennsylvania and Virginia. There were signs that key voting groups, including young people, Black voters and Latinos who shifted toward President Donald Trump’s Republican Party just a year ago, may be shifting back. And Democrats across the political spectrum coalesced behind a simple message focused on Trump’s failure to address rising costs and everyday kitchen table issues. But just beneath the party’s relief at securing its first big electoral wins since last November’s drubbing lay unresolved questions about its direction heading into next year’s midterm elections.

US--Indigenous Boarding Schools

The remains and stories of Native American students are being reclaimed from a Pennsylvania cemetery

SUMMARY: The latest round of exhumations of Native American students from a cemetery at the former Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania resulted in the remains of 17 students being repatriated to their families and tribes, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. Most details about the lives they lived are lost to history, but records offer glimpses into their experiences at Carlisle. That’s where 7,800 students from 100 tribes were sent as the U.S. government systematically and violently evicted Native Americans from their lands to seize them for white settlers. Several hundred people attended reburials in October, including relatives who shared family memories of their loved ones.

FBC--T25-Notre Dame-Kickers

No. 10 Notre Dame looking for a solution to give its kicking woes the boot in Navy matchup

SUMMARY: Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has his team sitting at No. 10 in the AP poll and the College Football Playoff’s first rankings of the season. If the Fighting Irish intend to stay in the postseason picture they’ll have to kick the habit of missing field goals and extra points. It’s been a season-long problem that re-emerged in last weekend’s 25-10 victory over Boston College when three different kickers missed attempts. Freeman would like to give those problems the boot, starting with Notre Dame's annual game against rival Navy on Saturday.

Ravens look forward after the deadline — Jones arrives and Andrews stays with Baltimore

SUMMARY: Dre’Mont Jones brought his sack streak to Baltimore. The Ravens acquired Jones in a deadline deal with the Tennessee Titans, and now he’ll try to provide his new team some much-needed help in the pass rush. Jones had a sack in each of his last four games with Tennessee. Trading a draft pick for Jones was the Ravens’ big move at the deadline. Falcons sign kicker Zane Gonzalez after releasing Parker Romo for costly missed extra point

SUMMARY: The Atlanta Falcons have signed Zane Gonzalez, giving the veteran kicker another opportunity after he was cut by Washington in April. The 30-year-old Gonzalez is replacing Parker Romo, who was released on Tuesday. Romo missed an extra point with 4:40 left in Sunday’s 24-23 loss at New England. Gonzalez gained notoriety with Washington last season as fans caught onto his obsessive-compulsive disorder. He kicked a game-winning field goal in the playoffs against Tampa Bay, but not until after he adjusted his socks on the sideline and fixed his hair. US--Be Well-Bike Bus

From a few to more than 350, children and parents ride together to school as a 'bike bus'

SUMMARY: In the New Jersey township of Montclair, a group bicycle ride to school has become a weekly community ritual. On Fridays, children and parents join a “bike bus” that goes to all the local elementary schools. The initiative started three years ago with a few people wanting to create healthy habits for their children and strengthen the sense of community among parents. One of the regular 5-mile routes attracted 350 riders on a recent morning. The nonprofit organization Bike Bus World says hundreds of similar groups exist throughout the United States and Europe, and in some other countries. Pittsburgh did sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the practice squad, reuniting him with Rodgers, whom he played alongside in Green Bay earlier in their respective careers. FBN--NFL-Bundesliga Links

Common ground: NFL teams link up with Bundesliga soccer clubs and both sides look to score

SUMMARY: Several NFL teams have inked partnerships with Bundesliga clubs. Borussia Dortmund and the Pittsburgh Steelers are among them. They note both teams have links in the steel industry and pride themselves on a blue-collar ethic. Their agreement is one of several formal partnerships between Bundesliga clubs and NFL teams as both sides look to make inroads in each other’s territories to expand their fan bases and commercial opportunities. Other NFL-Bundesliga partnerships include the Carolina Panthers and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as the Detroit Lions and Cologne. There are natural links with each. Charlotte and Frankfurt are major financial hubs; Detroit and Cologne have long histories in auto manufacturing.

BKW--Women's Poll at 50-The Founder

Mel Greenberg marks 50 years since starting women's basketball poll

SUMMARY: Mel Greenberg started the women's basketball poll 50 years ago at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Initially skeptical due to the lack of information, he pushed forward with determination. He needed approval from the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which was initially hesitant. After gaining support from coaches, Greenberg set up a network for voting. The first poll was published in 1976, and two years later, it was distributed by The Associated Press. Coaches voted until 1994, when journalists took over. Greenberg, known as the "Guru," retired in 2010 but still updates his poll database weekly.
