Federal judges in 2 states considering challenges to the government's treatment of Abrego Garcia
SUMMARY: Federal judges in two states are considering challenges to the government’s treatment of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The Salvadoran national's mistaken deportation to his home country galvanized opposition to President Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration agenda. In a Maryland court, Abrego Garcia has challenged efforts to deport him. Abrego Garcia's attorneys claim the Republican administration is illegally using the immigration system to punish him after the embarrassment of his mistaken deportation. Attorneys in Tennessee have made similar claims about human smuggling charges brought against Abrego Garcia. A Tennessee federal judge has set a hearing for November on a motion to dismiss the charges there.

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what he calls a “semiannual physical." The White House announced the visit earlier this week. Trump is preparing to travel to the Middle East shortly after his Friday medical exam. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described the visit earlier this week as a “routine yearly checkup,” although the Republican president had his annual physical in April. White House aides have declined to explain why Trump is getting another checkup. Trump told reporters Thursday he thinks he’s in great shape. Trump plans to return to the White House after the visit.

Antifa expert at Rutgers University says he is moving to Spain because of death threats
SUMMARY: An expert on anti-fascist groups who teaches at New Jersey’s flagship state university is moving his family overseas. Mark Bray's decision follows death threats he’s received amid claims by the campus chapter of Turning Point USA and other conservative groups that he is a member of antifa and should be fired. Bray plans to live in Spain and teach remotely for the current academic year, then hopes to be back on campus next fall. He is an expert on antifa, but denies being involved with the movement that conservatives argue is responsible for political violence.

What to do if your flight is delayed or canceled during the US government shutdown
SUMMARY: The federal government shutdown has entered its second week, and already shortages of air traffic controllers have strained operations and disrupted flights at some U.S. airports. The situation may well get worse if the shutdown continues and employees start to miss paychecks. And there is no way to predict what airports might have problems on any given day. So be sure to check your flight's status before you head to the airport. If your flight is canceled, airlines will rebook you on a later flight. If you no longer want to take the trip, you should be able to get a refund. But each airline's policies can differ, and airlines are not required to pay cash compensation.

Energy company abandons proposal to store nuclear waste at site in New Mexico
SUMMARY: A private energy company is abandoning a proposal to store nuclear waste at a site in southeastern New Mexico. Holtec International described an “untenable path forward for used fuel storage in New Mexico” as it walked away from the proposal to temporarily store spent fuel from commercial nuclear power plants across the nation. The New Jersey-based company confirmed its decision Thursday. Holtec said the move would allow it to work with other states that are more amenable. The New Mexico storage project was cast aside despite a favorable U.S. Supreme Court ruling in August. The U.S. is at an impasse over a permanent solution for storing spend nuclear fuel.

A grim list: Some notable attacks on houses of worship around the world in recent years
SUMMARY: Houses of worship have faced various types of attacks throughout history, but such assaults are not relics of the past. There has been a series of high-profile deadly attacks in recent years. Fear and vigilance rise as attacks on houses of worship intensify worldwide
SUMMARY: Statistically, attending a weekly worship service is a remarkably safe thing to do. Global annual attendance totals many billions; the number of people killed in attacks on individual houses of worship in any given year is generally less than a few hundred. Yet recent high-profile deadly attacks have intensified anxiety and outright fear among clergy and worshippers worldwide. Just in the past six weeks there have been attacks on a synagogue in Manchester, England; a Michigan congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and a Catholic church in the United States hosting a Mass for school children.

Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams match up again 1 year after Hail Mary decided Bears-Commanders
SUMMARY: Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams will face each other again as pros when the Washington Commanders host the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Daniels' 52-yard completion to Noah Brown for a touchdown on the final play lifted Washington to an 18-15 victory over visiting Chicago a year ago. That helped Washington go 12-5 and make it to the NFC title game. That devastating loss put Chicago on a path toward a 10-game losing streak. Daniels and Williams are likely to be forever linked because both were Heisman Trophy winners and Williams went No. 1 overall in the 2024 draft, one spot ahead of Daniels.

Ricard hasn’t played all season, and coach John Harbaugh said early this week the Ravens were hoping he could return for their game against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 26. Ravens have won 5 of their last 6 against Rams, but Lamar Jackson appears unlikely to play this time
SUMMARY: The Rams are 1-4 against the Ravens in Baltimore. Their lone win was 20-19 on a last-minute touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Odell Beckham Jr. on Jan. 2, 2022. Lamar Jackson did not play in that game for the Ravens and he appears unlikely to go this week either. Jackson missed last weekend's game with a hamstring injury and has missed more practice time this week. Quinnen Williams says Jets' defense to blame for 0-5 start ahead of London game vs. Broncos
SUMMARY: It doesn’t take Quinnen Williams long to dissect why the Jets are winless. He says they have probably have the NFL's worst defense. No takeaways through Week 5 and just three sacks in the past four games leads New York’s star defensive lineman to his conclusion before facing the Denver Broncos at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He says the defense has been the reason the Jets are 0-5. Williams was asked if being abroad can help the team reset. SUMMARY: New York Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer didn't waste time making a first impression. The 18-year-old top overall pick in June's draft collected the first point of his career in his NHL debut, a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Islanders coach Patrick Roy praised Schaefer's performance, saying he looked comfortable and confident on the ice. Schaefer said there were some early jitters but they quickly went away. Schaefer is hoping for a different result when the Islanders host Washington in their home opener on Saturday.

Jalen Hurts throws an interception among mistakes that lead to the Eagles' 2nd consecutive loss
SUMMARY: Jalen Hurts overthrowing DeVonta Smith on what could have been an easy touchdown and getting intercepted punctuated the Philadelphia Eagles' second consecutive loss. It was Hurts' first interception of the season. The Eagles' defense also struggled, and Saquon Barkley's late fumble sealed the defeat at the New York Giants. But Hurts contributed to the Eagles going 1 of 9 on third down, and the Super Bowl MVP quarterback's struggles exemplify what's going wrong with the defending champions.

Steelers LB Nick Herbig is morphing from TJ Watt's protégé into a star in his own right
SUMMARY: Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig is stepping out of the considerable shadow cast by mentor T.J. Watt. Herbig has 2 1/2 sacks and an interception over Pittsburgh's last three games while filling in for the injured Alex Highsmith. While Highsmith is expected to return for a Week 6 matchup with Cleveland, Herbig has been so productive he will continue to be a regular in the lineup. At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, Herbig is undersized for an edge rusher by today's NFL standards. The third-year pro says he's used to defying expectations, saying he learned the hard way while growing up the youngest of three brothers.

Dodgers advance to NLCS, beat Phillies 2-1 on Kerkering's 11th-inning error
SUMMARY: Orion Kerkering made a wild throw past home instead of tossing to first after mishandling Andy Pages’ bases-loaded comebacker with two outs in the 11th inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 to win their NL Division Series 3-1. Kerkering hung his head and put hands on knees after his throw sailed past catcher J.T. Realmuto as pinch-runner Hyeseong Kim crossed the plate, advancing the Dodgers to the NL Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs or Milwaukee. Realmuto had pointed to first when the two-hopper hit off Kerkering’s glove and rolled just in front of the mound.
