US--Dominion-Newsmax Defamation Case

Conservative network Newsmax agrees to pay $67M in defamation case over bogus 2020 election claims

SUMMARY: The conservative network Newsmax has agreed to pay $67 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of defaming a voting equipment company by spreading lies about President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss. The settlement announced Monday comes after Fox News Channel paid $787.5 million to settle a similar lawsuit in 2023 and Newsmax paid what court papers describe as $40 million to settle a libel lawsuit from a different voting machine manufacturer, Smartmatic, which also was a target of pro-Trump conspiracy theories on the network. Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis ruled earlier Newsmax defamed Denver-based Dominion Voting Systems by airing false information about the company and its equipment. Dominion says it's pleased to have settled.

US--Trump-DC Takeover-Black Mayors

Black mayors of cities Trump decries as 'lawless' tout significant declines in violent crimes

SUMMARY: Members of the African American Mayors Association started noticing last year declines in violent crime in their cities. But, those accomplishments, which they felt were already overlooked, became further buried this week with the Trump administration’s unprecedented law enforcement takeover in the nation’s capital. President Donald Trump has deployed the first of 800 National Guard members to Washington, D.C. But, the Republican president is setting his sights on other cities including Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles and Oakland, California. One thing they all have in common: They're led by Black mayors. The federal government’s actions have heightened some of these mayors’ desires to champion the strategies they’ve used to help make their cities safer.

US--Digital Ad Tax

Maryland's first-in-the-nation tax on digital ads violated Big Tech's free speech, judges say

SUMMARY: A federal appeals court has ruled that part of a first-in-the-nation tax on digital advertising in Maryland aimed at Big Tech is unconstitutional. The ruling on Friday by a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says a ban on identifying the tax as a way of passing it along to customers violates free speech. The ruling reverses a decision by U.S. District Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby and sends the case back to her with instructions to consider an appropriate remedy in light of the panel’s decision. Big Tech has argued the 2021 law unfairly targets companies like Meta, Google and Amazon.

US--US Steel-Plant Explosion

Fatal explosion at U.S. Steel's plant raises questions about its future, despite heavy investment

SUMMARY: The explosion this week at U.S. Steel's Pittsburgh-area plant has reignited debate about its future. The Clairton plant is part of a long-standing steelmaking tradition in the Mon Valley and faces uncertainty despite recent investments. Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel promised continued operations, but the explosion that killed two workers could challenge that commitment. The plant has a history of accidents and fines, raising concerns about safety and maintenance. While Nippon Steel pledged to invest in U.S. Steel's aging facilities, it's unclear if Clairton will see modernization. The plant's future remains uncertain amid changing market dynamics and economic pressures.

US--Election 2026-Pennsylvania-Governor

Republican Stacy Garrity seeks to challenge Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s reelection bid

SUMMARY: Pennsylvania’s two-term elected state Treasurer Stacy Garrity will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro’s reelection bid in 2026. Garrity's announcement Monday comes after she teased a run for months and stepped up her criticism of Shapiro. Some top Pennsylvania Republicans hope Garrity will see a clear primary field, although those hopes have been buffeted in recent weeks by 2022’s losing gubernatorial candidate suggesting that he'll run again. Shapiro carries a reputation as a disciplined messenger and powerhouse fundraiser. He's grown into a national figure after he made Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ shortlist for vice presidential running mates last year.

PA--Online Pardon Applications

People seeking to clear their record of a criminal conviction can now do so online in Pa.

SUMMARY: Pennsylvania recently launched an online application for pardons, becoming one of the first states to digitize the process for people seeking to clear their record of criminal convictions. Thousands of people apply annually, seeking approval from the five-member Board of Pardons and the governor to wipe their records of criminal history. Previously, people had to fill out paper applications and mail it to the board with relevant documents. Officials say the process was onerous for applicants and Board of Pardons staff. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis says the online application is intended to give more people the opportunity to earn a pardon as well as make processing those applications easier and more efficient.
