Wrongfully imprisoned Maryland man who spent 32 years behind bars sues former authorities
SUMMARY: A Maryland man who was wrongly imprisoned for 32 years for two murders he did not commit is suing former law enforcement officials, though four of the five people named in the lawsuit are deceased. The civil lawsuit was announced Thursday. John Huffington was pardoned by then-Gov. Larry Hogan in January 2023. The former governor cited prosecutorial misconduct in granting a full innocence pardon for Huffington in connection with a 1981 double slaying in Harford County. A Maryland board approved $2.9 million in compensation for Huffington later that year. Huffington had spent a decade on death row during his incarceration and had always maintained his innocence.

Habba announced her new role on social media, emphasizing her commitment to justice. Earlier in the week, judges had declined to extend Habba's tenure, appointing Desiree Leigh Grace instead. However, Grace was later removed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. Habba's office has been involved in several high-profile cases, including against Democratic Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver.

Giants' busy offseason got stamps of approval from standout young receiver Malik Nabers
SUMMARY: Like what the New York Giants did this offseason? Thank Malik Nabers. No, the wide receiver coming off an impressive rookie year didn’t add general manager to his responsibilities. But Nabers said coach Brian Daboll did consult him about moves specifically being made on offense after the unit was among the worst in the NFL last year. Among them were signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and drafting Jackson Dart and Cam Skattebo. On Thursday, the Giants also rewarded defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence by adding $3 million in incentives to his contract for this season.

Yankees prospect Spencer Jones homers in first 3 at-bats in Triple-A game
SUMMARY: Yankees prospect Spencer Jones homered in his first three at-bats in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 10-8 loss to Rochester on Thursday. A frequent subject of trade rumors, the left-handed hitting Jones — a towering figure at the plate at 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds — took the minor league home run lead with 29. The 24-year-old former Vanderbilt star has 13 homers in 19 games in Triple-A. New York drafted him 25th overall in 2022. Jones had his first three-homer game, with all of them off Bryce Conley — and on two-strike pitches. In the first, Jones hit Bryce Conley’s changeup 401 feet to left-center. Jones led off the third with a 425-foot shot to right and added a 433-footer to center in the fifth.

Aaron Rodgers' first training camp in Pittsburgh starts with a meaningless pick and careful optimism
SUMMARY: The Aaron Rodgers era in Pittsburgh got off to an inauspicious start. The star quarterback's first pass of training camp was picked off by a teammate. The 41-year-old four-time NFL MVP shrugged off the mistake, saying he's going to take some chances, particularly during practice. USC-Notre Dame rivalry expires in '26, with no sure bet it will go beyond that
SUMMARY: All the talk about scheduling and playoff formats in college football has placed one of the sport’s best traditions in peril: the USC-Notre Dame game. The contract for a rivalry that dates to 1926 expires in 2026. Both schools have expressed a willingness to lock down more games, but differences over how many appear to be holding up the negotiations. Speaking at Big Ten media days, Trojans coach Lincoln Riley said he was, of course, hopeful that the series will continue but only if it's in the best interest of his program.

American Conference deserves fair shot at College Football Playoff, commissioner says
SUMMARY: Commissioner Tim Pernetti wants the newly rebranded American Conference included in the College Football Playoff conversation. Pernetti says his conference has teams capable of competing in the 12-team playoff for the national championship. H emphasized on Friday a merit-based system where the five highest-ranked conference champions receive automatic bids, regardless of conference. Last season, the American Conference had competitive teams but none made the playoffs. Pernetti argues against predetermined playoff spots for larger conferences, advocating for opportunities to be earned on the field. He warns against repeating past mistakes of favoritism and confusion that he said came with the Bowl Championship Series.
