States sue US government over deal ending ban on triggers that make some rifles fire more rapidly
SUMMARY: Sixteen states have sued the Trump administration over its plan to allow the sale of forced-reset triggers and return seized devices. The suit announced Monday argues that returning the triggers, which make semiautomatic rifles fire more rapidly, would violate federal law, pose a threat to residents and law enforcement and worsen gun violence. The administration announced the deal last month. It resolved a series of cases over the aftermarket trigger. The government previously had argued the triggers are essentially illegal machine gun conversion devices because constant finger pressure on the triggers will keep a rifle firing essentially like an automatic.

NIH scientists publish declaration criticizing Trump's deep cuts in public health research
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s National Institutes of Health director says some employees’ critical letter to him has “fundamental misconceptions about the policy directions the NIH has taken.” Monday’s letter from NIH researchers and staffers says the Republican Trump administration’s policies waste public resources and harm people’s health. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya in his confirmation hearings pledged openness to views that might conflict with his, saying dissent is the “essence of science.” The NIH employees’ letter says, “We dissent.” Bhattacharya says ”respectful dissent in science is productive.” The White House says it’s ”restoring the Gold Standard of Science” for federal research instead of pursuing “ideological activism.”

Amazon to spend $20B on data centers in Pennsylvania, including one next to a nuclear power plant
SUMMARY: Amazon says it will spend $20 billion on two data center complexes in Pennsylvania, including one it is building alongside a nuclear power plant that has drawn federal scrutiny over its arrangement to essentially plug right into the power plant. Kevin Miller of Amazon’s cloud computing subsidiary, Amazon Web Services, told The Associated Press on Monday that the company will build another data center complex just north of Philadelphia. The data centers are designed to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence products. Amazon has recently committed to big data center projects in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina as it expands to compete with other tech giants.

Schmidt is hoping this ends with a better result. He is one of Florida's newcomers who were not part of the title run last year.

US Open gets a soggy start to the week at Oakmont, with Jordan Spieth among early arrivals
SUMMARY: U.S. Open week is off to a soggy start at Oakmont. Players are starting to arrive equipped with umbrellas and expectations of a typical tough test. Jordan Spieth was among the early arrivals. He played the front nine Saturday and got in 11 holes Sunday. The rough is every bit as deep and thick as advertised. Spieth says it's one of the few U.S. Open courses that doesn't need a lot of work to be ready for a major. He says mistakes are bound to happen. The key to Oakmont is not to compound the mistakes.
