What Trump ordering an investigation into Biden's actions might mean legally and politically
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into pardons and other executive actions issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden — launching an unprecedented effort to show that the Democrat hid his cognitive decline and was otherwise too mentally impaired to do the job. Trump, who turns 79 this month, has long questioned the mental acuity and physical stamina of Biden, and his now directing his administration to use governmental investigative powers to try and back up those assertions. Biden, 82, and now undergoing treatments for prostate cancer, dismissed Trump’s actions as “ridiculous.” Legal experts say a president's right to issue pardons is absolute and expect that the legal consequences of Trump's order are unlikely to be greater than the political impact.

HBCUs depend on federal funding. Their leaders are walking a tightrope on Trump's DEI attacks
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has affirmed the importance of historically Black colleges and universities, and the schools have not faced the kind of pressures that have rocked Ivy League schools Trump has blasted as hotbeds of “wokeness” and antisemitism. But that is not to say it’s a comfortable time for HBCUs’ leaders. The Trump administration’s campaign against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives has encouraged restrictions on classroom discussions around racism, led to cuts in federal research grants, and prompted some colleges to shutter offices that support students of color. For HBCUs, the moment is reminiscent of the era decades ago when they walked a political tightrope to maintain government support for their institutions, said one historian.

Arrest made in theft of instruments stolen from the rock band Heart at New Jersey venue
SUMMARY: Authorities have made an arrest in the theft of two irreplaceable instruments owned by members of the rock band Heart that were stolen from a venue in New Jersey last weekend. Atlantic City police say surveillance video initially led them to the 57-year-old Pleasantville man. They say he was later seen on video walking through various parts of the city, trying to sell the instruments, and he eventually sold one while the other remains unaccounted for. The man has been charged with burglary and theft.

SUMMARY: Nearly a dozen candidates will compete in New Jersey on Tuesday for the chance to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. Detained Columbia graduate claims ‘irreparable harm’ to career and family as he pleads for release
SUMMARY: A Columbia graduate facing deportation over his pro-Palestinian activism on campus has outlined the “irreparable harm” caused by his continued detention as a federal judge weighs his release. Mahmoud Khalil said in court filings unsealed Thursday that the “most immediate and visceral harms” he’s faced during his months in custody relate to missing out on the birth of his first child. He also cited potentially “career-ending” harms from the ordeal, noting that Oxfam International has already rescinded a job offer. Khalil’s statement was among a number of legal declarations submitted by his lawyers highlighting the wide-ranging impacts of his arrest.

Walmart's army of bakery decorators take the cake when it comes to hourly store pay
SUMMARY: The school graduation season is the busiest time of year for the Walmart workers who hand-decorate cakes per customers’ orders. The cakes and optional fillings come pre-baked and frozen from suppliers, but the nation's largest retailer holds a big slice of the American custom cake market. The company says one out of four cakes sold in the U.S. comes from Walmart, and that its workers will collectively decorate more than 1 million cakes during May and June. The discount retail chain's 6,200-strong army of icing artisans are Walmart's highest paid hourly workers, excluding store managers. Detractors on social media have accused the decorators of stealing ideas and undercutting professional cake artists with inexpensive products.

No injuries when fire erupts at Philadelphia transit lot filled with decommissioned buses
SUMMARY: A fast-moving fire erupted in Philadelphia at a transit bus lot filled with dozens of decommissioned vehicles. The Thursday morning blaze did not cause any injuries, but it burned for nearly two hours before it was declared under control. Authorities say 40 Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority buses were engulfed in flames. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The city’s Public Health Department inspectors collected samples to assess air quality and the potential for any threat. Citing an abundance of caution, the agency warned nearby residents to stay indoors if possible.

Belmont at Saratoga is a draw, but keeping the Triple Crown relevant remains a concern
SUMMARY: The second Belmont Stakes at Saratoga in upstate New York is a draw for avid fans, given the track’s place in horse racing history and a nod to its roots. But the debate continues about how to keep the Triple Crown relevant for a casual audience. Horse racing is one of the oldest sports in the nation, dating back to before the Declaration of Independence. But unlike then, horse racing now has to compete for attention in a crowded sports landscape.

SUMMARY: Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep and extend their season-best winning streak to six games. 'The heat got to us:' Giants' practice ends with a fight as players push, shove and throw punches
SUMMARY: The New York Giants went from running plays to squaring off, ready to rumble in the middle of the field. Punches were thrown and helmets and players tossed aside. And they haven’t even made it to minicamp yet. Edge rusher Brian Burns said the heat got to the players Thursday after the Giants’ sixth practice of organized team activities. First, Burns and left tackle James Hudson took off their helmets and squared up as if they were going to fight. On the next play, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor got into it and Thibodeaux took a swing at his teammate. A few players ended up on the ground.

Conforto has struggled mightily in his first season with the Dodgers, but he drove a two-out single to left off Reed Garrett for the Dodgers’ third unearned run of the eighth. Sitting on the sideline during practice is a wooden turnover chest that contains no gold, silver or jewels. When a defensive player creates a turnover with an interception or a fumble recovery he gets to place the football inside the chest while the entire unit celebrates. US Open '25: Oakmont's par-3 8th hole requires removing a head cover
SUMMARY: Oakmont is known for its bunkers and fast greens. But also getting a lot of attention going into the U.S. Open is the par-3 eighth hole. It measures 289 yards on the card as the longest par 3 in the majors. But it is certain to play 300 yards or more at least in one of the rounds as it did in the 2007 U.S. Open. Viktor Hovland is among those who don't like a par 3 that stretches so long players have to remove head covers on their fairway metals. He says then it starts getting silly.
