CAMBRIDGE — As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to develop, local groups are reaching out to spread the word about changes to their events and schedules. It remains a good idea to check on the status of goods and services before leaving home.
The Banner compiled a list of announcements over the previous week, which follows:
C-SD teacher
Mike Dorrenbacher
My kiddos from my first period class wanted to have a discussion on WWI. I allotted an hour for them at the beginning of this pandemic on Thursdays to have chats and discussions on the assignments. They stayed for an hour and 45 minutes today. I know this isn’t the easiest thing in the world for anyone, but it’s moments like these that are going to be memories forever.
The fact these kids could be doing anything else (and some were actually multitasking while in the chat with the class) but they are choosing to be in a chat with their classmates and their teacher means the world to me. Even though there’s a serious pandemic going on, these kids are going above and beyond what is expected of them to have the opportunity to continue learning. Even though it’s not the same as seeing them in person, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue teaching them!!
I Love Dorchester County
This will be a welcome sight! Cambridge MD Rotary Club plans to move ahead with their annual Flags for Heroes display at the Amphitheater at Sailwinds Park, right next to the Dorchester Visitor Center! They need your help to make it happen. Honor people you consider heroes, past or present, by sponsoring a flag. Includes a plaque with the name of your hero and brief description, plus your name. The funds raised support local veterans programs and other community service projects. The flags will go up during the last week of May.

MidShore Meals til Monday
A great big thank you to Karla Sue Wilkins, Heath Kelsey and so many other generous and caring people who are helping with our Mac & cheese drive. St. Paul’s Church, Habitat Choptank are all wonderful friends who are helping feed our kids.
Won’t you donate 10 boxes of store- brand, 7.5 oz Mac & cheese? For under $4.00 you can be the difference whether children eat dinner-/ that box will feed more than one person so those 10 boxes for under $4.00 could be a meal for over 20 people!
That’s powerful! Call us at 443-225-6789 to find out about drop off times and location or if you’d like us to pick it up. Thank you!
Leslie Bishop, Meals til Monday
Each month I have to collect data for the Maryland Food Bank. On Friday I submitted the Meals to Monday report for April.
We had 56 wonderful volunteers help pack and distribute the Meals til Monday bags. These volunteers worked a total of 693 hours; or about 12 1/2 hours each.
We distributed 5,055 weekend bags of food, 400 bags of food at our Food Give-Away at Vienna ES and helped about 1,200 children and their families.
We distributed about 17,000 pounds of food to Dorchester County children and their families. Team Meals til Monday rocks!
Habitat for Humanity Choptank
Thank you to everyone who donated food supplies this week! We are incredibly grateful for all of your donations!
Wednesday, members of our staff were able to drop these items off to MidShore Meals til Monday and CarePacks. Pictured are some of the donated items from this week and Megan Cook and Emily Moody, the founders of CarePacks!
As a reminder, we will continue to collect donations each week until this pandemic is over.

Drop off Days/Times:
Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 3pm
Drop off locations: 314 Cambridge Landing in Cambridge
(drop off in garage)

Not only are parents finding out their kids can’t read, kids are finding out their parents can’t read.
There is help through different agencies that can help parents and their children. This creates a tough problem with in the household. Let’s get past the shame let’s identify the families so we can get them to help they need.

City of Cambridge
Dear Neighbor:
The Mayor and City Commissioners of Cambridge along with the County Health Department, Dorchester County Officials, emergency management, and area non-profits and civic groups are organizing an effort to provide over 1,000 care packages to Dorchester County households who currently receive assistance from area food banks. The hope is that each care package will have face coverings, hygiene items, and cleaning supplies.
The Care and Share Fund has contributed $1,000 and almost $2,000 to date has been donated toward the cause. Also, local citizens have already crafted over 140 face coverings that will be distributed.
If you have any questions and would like to participate, feel free to contact City Hall at 410-228-4020.
MAC, Area Agency on Aging
In this time of social distancing and the COVID-19 crisis, staying connected has never been more important. Older adults in particular are at a higher risk of isolation, loneliness and increased frail health. For those seniors living alone confusion, fear and depression can lead to even greater health and fall risks.
Here’s how MAC can help:
Care Watch: A new program which is designed to connect area seniors to the services they need, or to a friendly voice to help them cope with the loneliness and isolation caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
Pearls: Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding Lives helps those age 60 and older to better manage unpleasant feelings like sadness, loneliness, and isolation.
Both programs are free and are available via telephone.
To connect with Care Watch or PEARLS, call MAC at 410-742-0505.
