Team captains and planning committee members for Dorchester Relay For Life 2018 gather at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge, the site of the 22nd annual event on May 18.
CAMBRIDGE — The galaxy won’t be far away as Dorchester Relay For Life 2018 celebrates “May the Cure Be With You on May 18. The 22nd annual cancer awareness and fundraising event will take place at a new location this year: Sailwinds Park in Cambridge. The theme – “May the Cure Be With You” — emphasizes the progress modern medicine has made in helping to find cures for many types of cancer. Relay teams have been working throughout the year raising funds and awareness at various events in the area. The May 18 event will be the culmination of those efforts as cancer survivors and their families, teams and corporate sponsors gather at Sailwinds. Guest speaker will be Cambridge resident Cecil Johnson, a cancer survivor and the owner of the Cambridge Spice Company. The event kicks off with a cancer survivors reception in Governors Hall at Sailwinds at 4 p.m. The survivors and their supporters will be taking the first lap on the walkway around the park at 6 p.m. Leading the first lap will be the Cambridge Police Department Color Guard, followed by the Maple Elementary School Marching Lions Band. The National Anthem will be presented by the North Dorchester Middle School Singers. A ceremony in memory of those who lost the battle and in honor of those still fighting cancer will be held at dusk when luminaria are lit around the park walkway. Entertainment for the event will be provided by D.J. Whisper with live music by Matthew King and the Unacceptables. “The Dorchester Relay For Life Committee is looking forward to celebrating the 22nd year of this event at Sailwinds Park,” said event chair Dawn Cook. “Dorchester’s Relay For Life has raised over $2 million to fight cancer since its beginning.” She invited attendees to celebrate “May the Cure Be With You” by wearing “Star Wars”-themed costumes if they wish.
