CAMBRIDGE - Mary Alice Thompson, 90, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at Mallard Bay Care Center.
She was born in the village of TB, Prince George's County, on April 29, 1916, the daughter of Aquila and Blanche K. Turner. She spent most of her childhood on Greenwood farm in Aquasco. As a young woman, she attended business school in Washington, D.C. and later worked in Baltimore, as a clerk at the Internal Revenue Service.
Mary Alice Turner married Charles Awdry Thompson, a young attorney from Hurlock, on Aug. 18, 1940. For a time she continued working in Baltimore as he began his law practice in Cambridge, and later as he served in the United States Navy during World War II.
After the war, Mr. Thompson joined the late Calvin Harrington Sr. in the practice of law in Cambridge. Soon, Calvin Harrington Jr. also became a partner. The partnership continued until Mr. Thompson was appointed associate judge on the first Maryland Court of Special Appeals in 1967.
Mrs. Thompson was very involved in the Cambridge/Dorchester Community. She served on the Board of the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital and was active in its Auxiliary, chairing the cart committee for a time. She was active in Girl Scouting, the Dorchester Historical Society and the Red Cross. She received Red Cross training in home nursing and first aid and was called to assist in South Dorchester after the devastation of Hurricane Hazel.
At Christ Episcopal Church she served on the Junior Guild and taught a Bible School class. She served on the Board of Directors for Channel Marker, Inc. Mrs. Thompson and her husband were politically active. They attended the Inaugural Ball for John F. Kennedy in 1960 with Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Harrington Jr.
Mary Thompson is survived by her daughter, Julia Thompson Moore and her husband, John G.; her son, Charles Turner Thompson; her grandson, Attorney John G. Moore Jr. and his wife, Jennifer; her great-granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Moore; her brother, William B. Turner and his wife, Evelyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Gail Jane Thompson; and two sisters, Emily T. Shrewsbury and Anna R. Turner.
Arrangements will be handled by Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home of Cambridge.
