WASHINGTON, D.C. - Marva Alberta Banks Hughes, formerly of Cambridge, passed away on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at the Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, DC.

She was born June 10, 1938 in Cambridge, daughter of the late Gladys Lila Banks Williams and Joseph Sudler.

Marva was a graduate of Mace's Lane High School, Class of 1956. While in high school she excelled as an athlete in basketball and tennis and was a member of the school Glee Club. She was raised up in a Christian home and was a member of Bethel AME Church in Cambridge as a young person. She was a member of the Youth Sunday School, Junior Ushers, taught Vacation Bible School, sang on the choir and a member of the Christian Endeavor League.

After graduating from Mace's Lane, she continued her education by attending Morgan State College. Marva was employed at Georgetown Visitation Prep School from 1968 to 2001 serving as an educational instructional assistant for 33 years.

She was united in marriage to Daniel T. Hughes Sr. on Jan. 31, 1962. From this union one child was born Daniel T. Hughes Jr.

After moving to Washington, DC, she became a member of Faith Presbyterian Church under the pastorship of the Rev. Henry Eilend. While at Faith Presbyterian, she was instrumental in helping to construct the church library for the children.

Marva was an avid reader and loved to read poetry. She loved to crochet and make wall hangings. She was one of the organizers of the class reunions for Dorchester County. Marva was instrumental in constructing the 1956 Class Banner which is displayed each year at the All Classes Reunion for Mace's Lane High School.

Marva enjoyed being around people laughing and talking especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Hughes Sr. of Washington, DC; a son, Daniel Hughes Jr. of Washington, DC; a stepson, Keith Greene; two grandchildren, Parris Williams and Daniel Hughes III; four brothers, Richard Banks, Donald Bolden and Wayne Sudler all of Cambridge and William Sudler of Baltimore; two sisters, Josephine Sudler of Cambridge and Anne Sudler of California; six nieces; five nephews; two brothers-in-law, Milton Williams and LaCurtis Sisco; a sister-in-law, Shirley Williams; five special friends from childhood right up to adulthood, Carolyn Nichols Armstrong, Elvir Burkett Stanley, Barbara Myster Simms, Gladys Jarmon and the Rev. Enez Stafford Grubb and a number of cousins, other family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and a number of grandparents, uncles and aunts.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, at Refuge Temple Church of God, 800 Robbins St., Cambridge. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.

There will be a viewing Friday 6-8 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home, PA, 510 Washington St., Cambridge, and also one hour prior to the services.
