HURLOCK — Their fame is spreading as “the” place to go for Halloween in Hurlock. If you want to be scared this isn’t the place to go. If you want your children to have a happy, positive, uplifting experience try Marshmallows with the Murphys. For nine years Michelle and Earl Murphy have offered treats to area youngsters and their parents with warm, inviting fellowship. Earl says, 10 years ago “we were new in the Woods Edge community. Our first Halloween we went through over 100 popcorn balls in 15 minutes. We found some Little Debbie snacks in the closet. Those were gone. In the first hour of Trick or Treat we went through everything we had made for the event. We were out with our neighbors in the backyard. I told my wife, ‘honey, we’re just going to have to turn off the light.’ We did and went out back and started enjoying the marshmallows and hot dogs we were roasting. One of my neighbors said, ‘Earl I think there’s another trick or treater.’ Sure enough there was. Earl told the child all he had was a hot dog, to which the youngster replied, “That’s okay.” Other children followed and 10 or 15 costumed youngsters later the hot dogs were gone. He and Michelle asked each other “what are we going to do next year?” The answer was obvious, says Earl, “And for the past 9 years other than when Hurricane Sandy was here we’ve done Marshmallows with the Murphys.” With over 400 S’mores, gallons and gallons of cocoa, water, popcorn, and over 600 hot dogs and whatever else they find in their cabinet the Murphys make sure that the positive atmosphere of Christ watches over this event. There are even Holy Ghost pops. “We have a free hayride,” notes Earl. “Mike Bailey donates his tractor and we take the Miles Circle trip around the neighborhood. One group gets off and another group gets on. “There are about 1,000 people in my backyard every Halloween. All year long we hear ‘are you still having the event?’ Of course the answer is ‘yes.’” At the Hurlock Council Meeting on Oct. 26, Councilman Charles Cephas introduced a mother whose 5-year-old daughter is suffering from cancer. He asked that the community help her with donations to cover some of the costs involved in fighting cancer. Earl explained, “Hearing about the little girl tonight having cancer and because of always keeping the event positive we found another opportunity to help. We’re going to come up with an idea for contributions. Since we give everything we do away for free I think it might be a great opportunity to donate to help the child.” Doing for others in a positive way is what guides the Murphys. Marshmallows with the Murphys is slated for Saturday from 6-8 pm in Hurlock’s Woods Edge community.
