FRUITLAND - Malcolm P. Brookover, a long-time resident and native of South Norwalk, Conn., died on Friday, April 3, 2009, of respiratory failure at the age of 82. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Brookover was the owner of Stone-Brook Silversmiths and Jewelers in Darien, for 30 years. He was a gifted hand engraver, one of the last in the country. He retired and relocated to Crisfield, in 1988. He continued engraving from his home workshop, providing his service to many local jewelry stores and friends. Mr. Brookover developed an interest in carving waterfowl decoys, winning third prize in the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition in 1995 for his life size Canadian goose. He also loved to cook and was awarded second prize in 2000 and first prize in 2003 in the National Hard Crab Derby cooking contest in Crisfield, for his crab cake recipe. Mr. Brookover was a 20-year member of the American Legion Stanley Cochrane Post 16, a longtime member of the Crisfield Elks Lodge 1044 and the Lower Eastern Shore Moose 2431. He is predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Luebbe Brookover; and sisters, Vivian Brookover McSherry and Geraldine Brookover Heibler. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Trudy Johanning; daughters, Lisa Brookover Moore and Gail Brookover Burrroughs; step-sons, Kirk Johanning, Kye Johanning and Ken Johanning; and grandchildren, Kristin Moore Napora, Timothy Moore and Pavia Burroughs. A private memorial service is planned for a later date.
