Lloyd A. 'Mike' Phillips, 94

CAMBRIDGE - Lloyd A. "Mike" Phillips, 94, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.

He was born at Hoopers Island on Aug. 23, 1913 and was a son of the late Carlton and Rona Tolley Phillips.

Mr. Phillips attended schools at Fishing Creek. He had worked on the water for a number of years. During WW II Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army in the Quartermaster Corps and had served in Germany, France and England, and later worked as a carpenter with Delmas Davidson for 20 years and had retired at the age of 64. After he retired from carpentry work he went back to work on the water and continued working until age 89.

He was first married to Lottie Mae Simmons in 1946 and was then married to Doris Bailey in 1955. On Nov. 17, 1967 he was married to Helen Todd. She passed away on Dec. 22, 2005.

Mr. Phillips enjoyed woodworking and boating. He had been in failing health since August of 2006 and had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center since September of 2006.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Phillips and his, wife Karen Phillips of Cambridge; one step-daughter, Ovetta Creighton and her husband, Howard Creighton of Cambridge; one stepson, Wayne Bailey of Lithia Springs, Ga.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Berlie Gunter of Wilmington and Beatrice Brittingham of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Manford Phillips and a sister, Norma Murrell.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Pardee Bramble officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
