CAMBRIDGE — Say it’s a landmark, say it’s an eyesore - but today is the day to say goodbye to the former Kmart building on U.S. 50 in the middle of town. “We’re in the demolition of it right now,” developer Charlie Fairchild told the Banner on Friday.
The building has been closed for many years, ever since the Kmart moved out. Now, Fairchild Properties, LLC is in the midst of constructing Cambridge Marketplace on the site of the former Cambridge Plaza.
A fast-food restaurant and coffee shop have already opened their doors on the property, where a new entrance and access roads have also been completed. Today is the day, however, that the roof of the Kmart building, by far the largest on the site, will be knocked down.
As for the remaining parts of the structure, “It will be down in two weeks,” Mr. Fairchild said.
There will be much more at Cambridge Plaza than restaurants. “The mixed-use plans include a Shore Health medical facility, medical office, a dialysis center, a grocery store, two banks, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and many of the same retailers who occupy the space today,” a statement on the county’s economic development website says.
The medical facility will be on the 115,000 square-foot spot where Kmart once did business. Multiply that footage by two floors and you have an idea of the size of the next occupant.
“Basically, you can stack this thing, and that’s what the hospital will be,” Mr. Fairchild said.
In the meantime, though, there’s plenty of work to be done, including hauling off the debris. Much of it will be the 71 dump truck loads of stone that held the roof in place - something of a surprise to the developer. “We didn’t even know it was there,” Mr. Fairchild said.
That’s a lot of stone and other materials, but no matter, it won’t go to waste. “Everything will be recycled,” he said.
