Animal lover Reagan Uncapher recorded shows for her two “stations,” WCAT and WDOG.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE — Ok, there are lots of letters coming up, but we’ll explain. WHCP and the YMCA teamed up last week to create WKPR. So ... local station WHCP, located on Race Street, supported the YMCA’s summer Media Camp with a joint project, the creation of “Kid Power Radio” — WKPR. “Show grown-ups how easy it is to make great radio, a message to the children said. “Whatever you really, really like, others will like, too.” Youngsters of elementary and middle school age wore headphones and focused expressions as they worked on laptops to download songs for their own shows, presented as “stations.” Each camper chose a theme, call letters, created a slogan and designed a log before heading into a studio with station founder and Manager Mike Starling. Once in front of a microphone with all the gear lit up, the child read an introduction and continued with music and talk. “We’re in our fourth year” with the camp, station volunteer Diane Marquette said, adding that today’s tech-minded youth are well-prepared for this kind of work. “The kids are very computer savvy.” Fellow volunteers Cat Beise and Susan Klise helped guide the campers, as did YMCA counselor Kane Schwarz. Participants were Jordan Cook, Morrigan Bell, Ryan Dodd, Riley Hitchcock, Isaiah Perez, Reagan Uncapher, Isaac Uncapher and K’Marion Hall. Each of the young radio personalities — that’s “jock” in the business, by the way — put together a show 10-12 minutes long. Those segments will be broadcast in the near future. The whole process earned Reagan’s approval. “They have so many fun things,” the blushing, 7-year-old girl said with a smile as her recorded show was played for a visitor.
