CAMBRIDGE - Joseph G. Mason Jr., 84, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Dorchester General Hospital.

He was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Minneapolis, Miss., son of the late Joseph G. Mason Sr. and Marguerite Ewald Mason.

Mr. Mason graduated in 1945 from Edison High School in Minneapolis. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 until 1945 during World War II, and received the American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1950 he married Ann Cherrington. Mr. Mason was a writer for Aviation Magazine. He was locally known for playing his trumpet with the Cambridge Brazz and Quiet Jazz.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Mason of Cambridge; a son, David Mason of Cambridge; a daughter, Judith Ann Becker of St. Louis; a grandson, Nick Becker of St. Louis; two sisters, Joan Lester and Mary Ackerman, both of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Mason was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
