WYE MILLS - John Harris aka "Doc" the second of thirteen children born to John and Louis Harris peacefully departed this life, while being surrounded by family, on Feb. 26, 2014. Born in Wye Mills, Maryland on Aug. 30, 1925, he received his formal education through the public school system of Talbot County, Maryland up until the seventh grade, when he dropped out to help care for his younger siblings. Doc later joined the United States Army during World War ll and served from 1946 to 1949, when he was honorably discharged. Upon returning to Maryland Doc gained employment at Easton Memorial Hospital, where he worked for over thirty-two years until his retirement. As the supervisor of environmental services Doc took great pride in the appearance of the hospital. Often going in late at night or the wee hours of the morning to clean and polish the floors. Doc believed in hard work and perseverance and was very outspoken but responded very generously to anyone in need. Doc was a lifetime member of New Zion United Methodist Church in Newtown and served in many capacities over the years, such as a member of the Zion gospel chorus, Usher, Chair of the Trustees and a participant of the Zion's Men's Association. ln addition Doc was an active member of The American Legion Blake-Blackston Post 77 and a former member of Samuel T. Helmsley Elks lodge #974. Doc enjoyed watching baseball and traveling to places such as Hawaii, Alaska, Jamaica, Mexico and Fiji lsland. Doc could often be found cooking or tending to his garden, which not only supplied his home, but all of his siblings, children and close friends with vegetables for an entire winter. ln addition to his parents Doc is preceded in death by siblings Beatrice Bowser, Robert Harris, Charles Harris, Magdalene Turner, and Doris Aldridge. Doc leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 50 years, Gloria Harris; six children, Clifton Walker (Betty), Gloria Farrare, Juanita Blake (Bobby), Generva Farrare, Joan Brooks (Albert) and Shirl Jenkins (Cornell); twelve grandchildren; thirty-eight great grandchildren; three brothers Kenneth (Barbara) Harris, Alfred (Mary) Harris and Larry (Anna Mae) Harris; four sisters, Eleanor Waters, Evelyn Deshields (Herbert), Nancy Williams (James) and Edith Greene (George); one brother-in-law James Bowser, two sisters-in-law Francis Mills and Consuela Pinket! a host of nieces, nephews and a Specialfriend who was like a son, John "Ronnie" Wilmer. Celebration of Life services will be held Thurs., March 6,2014 11am at Union Baptist Church 233 Glenwood Ave Easton, MD with a viewing two hours prior. Condolences sent to www.henryfuneralhomepa.com
