SALISBURY - James Franklin Cantwell, 84, of Salisbury died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cambridge he was the son of the late James Dawson Cantwell and Frances Adkins Cantwell.
Mr. Cantwell was a World War II Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific on the destroyer USS Lang. He participated in the battle of the Gaudalcanal and was a member of The National Association of Destroyer Veterans (Tin Can Sailors).
He was a member of St. Andrew"s United Methodist Church in Salisbury and former member of St. Paul"s United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
He had worked for John W. Tieder Inc. in Cambridge and retired from the Dorchester County Board of Education as an electrician. He enjoyed carving decoys and building decorative boats.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean T. Cantwell; a son, Rick Cantwell and his wife, Janet of Cambridge; a daughter, Charlotte Coleman and her husband, Donald of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Cynda, Lynda, and Will Hill and Carrie Cantwell, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers; Goldsboro, Hammond, Elmer, and Armond Cantwell, and four sisters; Lillian Whiteman, Marvel Neal, Henrietta McBee and Olive Cannon.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew"s United Methodist Church in Salisbury. The Rev. Sally Dolch will officiate. Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery in Beulah.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Andrew"s United Methodist Church, 400 E. Vine St, Salisbury, MD 21804 or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.
Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Bounds Funeral Home.
