Ida Mae Macer

Quietly and peacefully, Nov. 4, 2015, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, mercy, and grace, gently closed the eyes of our beloved Ida Mae Macer. Ida Mae Foster Macer was born on Nov. 15, 1923 to the late Eleazor Foster and Ida Mae Payton Foster in Dorchester County. She was raised and educated in Cambridge. Mrs. Macer was a 1940 graduate of Frederick Douglass St. Clair High School. Ida Mae met and married the late Ralph Macer. Together they shared a life in Cambridge. Mr. Macer was the owner and operator of a cab company. Mrs. Macer assisted her husband in the business. Years later, Ida Mae decided to become an educator. She matriculated to Bowie State College in Bowie graduating in 1964 with a degree in elementary education. Ida Mae was a lifelong member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. There she was the church organist for well over 50 years, playing until her health failed. She began playing for the church when she was 18 years of age. At that time, she played for the Junior Choir. Mrs. Macer has played for the Chancel Choir, Senior Choir, Progressive Male Chorus, and Zion Travelers. She served as choir director for some of these choirs. Mrs. Macer also assisted with the Lillian Hollis Singers when needed. She has been very dedicated to Bethel AME Church and the choirs. On two separate occasions, she missed seeing Joe Lewis at Carrs Beach and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at what is now the University of Maryland because she had to play for Sunday service. Mrs. Macer was a member of the Matrons' Society at Bethel. She was also a member of the social club, The Modernettes Club. Ida Mae was an educator in the Dorchester County Public Schools for over 20 years until her illness. Ida Mae never fully retired. After her retirement the death of her sister and many of her close friends, Ida Mae returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher and worked in that capacity until she was 84 years young. Ida Mae was known for her pleasant smile, frankness, thriftiness, and honesty. She enjoyed traveling with her sister, shopping, and visiting with friends. Ida Mae loved entertaining her friends and co-workers with many comical stories and anecdotes. She was a devoted wife, sister, and friend. In addition to her parents, sister, and husband, she was preceded in death by her best friend Alice Foster, a brother Thomas Foster, and a number of close friends. Mrs. Macer leaves to cherish fond memories a faithful cousin Katherine Perry (Robert) Camper of Cambridge; a Goddaughter: Linda Marine Slaughter of Baltimore; her dearest friends: Thetus Boyd and Ann Johnson both of Washington DC, Sylvia Askew of Baltimore; and Audrey Morris of Forrestville; and a host of other cousins, relatives, and friends. A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Sat., Nov. 14th 2pm at Bethel AME Church Cambridge with a viewing two hours prior. Interment in Bethel Cemetery.
