HURLOCK — It was a perfect fall morning with a warm sun, light breeze, and cool autumn temperatures. Despite the numerous events on the Mid-Shore, the Hurlock Fall Festival attracted large groups of people. When the threat of hurricane Joaquin forced the move from Oct. 10 to the 17 it was uncertain if the annual celebration would attract as many visitors. But it turned out to be a day of fun for everyone.

While not as crowded as last year’s record number, there were crowds and the folks who came enjoyed a day chock-full of fun, food, and fabulous booths. Most popular? The train rides from Hurlock to Federalsburg. Every year the lines are long and tickets for those who did not pre-order are sold out quickly.

A baby contest brought smiles to everyone’s face as the littlest competitors were judged by judges who were faced with an unenviable task. With youngsters who don’t yet walk or talk, the smiles told their stories and parents did the talking.

The talent contest, ably emceed by Scott Reagan who volunteers yearly for the contest and the parade, was held in front of the train station. For ages 15 and younger, Courtney Jarrell won for her singing and her sister Lily won for dancing. The North Dorchester High School cheerleading squad received a $100 check for their efforts and an outstanding performance by the Talley Family singers won 1st prize.

Across from the Pavilion the town of Hurlock and Black Acre Farm offered free Pony Rides from noon until 2 pm. The lines were long for Holiday the Clown who performed magic and face painting. The food was great! Visitors could get a full day of carbs with hot pretzels, tortilla chips and dip, and mini donuts. There were hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks as well. The volunteer fire department offered food, drinks and a corn hole tournament.

The 2015 Fall Festival was bigger and better than ever despite the re-scheduling.
