Princess Fiona (Summer Snead) and Shrek (Christian Murphy) played lead characters in the Chesapeake Children’s Theatre recent production of Shrek The Musical Jr.[/caption] HURLOCK — Hurlock Councilman Earl Murphy and his wife Michelle are the proud parents of an “ogre.” Well, sort of. Their son Christian played the title role in the Chesapeake Children’s Theatre production of Shrek the Musical Jr. Directed by Kimberly Stevens with production coordinator Paula Snead, the show ran on June 10, 11, and 12 at the Easton Elks Club. The show is based on the 2001 Oscar-winning Dream Works Animation film. Three sequels and a Broadway show that toured nationally paved the way in 2010 for amateur theater groups to produce the show. Never heard of Shrek? You would be the only one in America especially considering the plethora of promotional items on the market. On Amazon alone there are 1,232 results for Shrek toys and games! According to Ms. Snead, the show is “Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek Jr. is an irreverently fun show for the whole family.” Reminiscent of Don Quixote, Shrek, the green ogre/hero and his wise-cracking donkey confront the “baddie,” Lord Farquaad who has invaded Shrek’s swamp with fairytale misfits. Our hero’s goal is to rescue “feisty” Princess Fiona from the dragon-guarded tower and thus ensure the return of his swamp. Christian Murphy is no stranger to the stage. He last appeared in the North Dorchester High School 2016 senior production of The Little Mermaid as Sebastian. His parents support his interests and were happy their son had “the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful program.
