HURLOCK - Hugh Carter Vinson gently left this world on Apr. 16, 2013 to embark on his final journey to be with his Lord. He died at his Hurlock home with his wife, Lynda at his side. Hugh was born on Jun. 2, 1943 in Baltimore, the son of Hugh Pete Vinson and Ruby Carter Vinson Booth. As a boy growing up in Hurlock, he might be remembered accompanying his mother to the Baptist church or sitting in her classroom where his antics became well known and were often repeated in story form years later, delivering papers on his bike or being named "the meanest little boy in Hurlock". Hugh went on to attend and graduate from Charlotte Hall Military Academy and Salisbury State College, while working locally during summers at Harper & Bateman and Continental Can Company. Once his degree in history was attained from SSU, his career as an educator began at Galena Elementary School and then on to North Dorchester High School. Teaching history was his first love. Hugh enjoyed interacting and enlightening his students about history, especially the Civil War. During this time he received his MA degree in history from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A new career would open for Hugh after he received his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in June 1978. This law career would take many paths over the years from private practice to Dorchester County States Attorney and Queen Anne County Assistant States Attorney, to the Town of Hurlock attorney, a position he held for thirty three years. We all knew Hugh as a completely unconventional man. There was a part of him for everyone. Which one do you remember - teacher, pioneer, Civil War buff, attorney, carpenter, writer, storyteller, or the guy tipping a few cold beers at the American Legion on Friday night? But maybe you just remember him as loving husband, father, step-father, Papa, or friend. He is survived by his wife, Lynda; daughters, Sarah Vinson of Los Angeles, Calif. and Laura Vinson of Richmond, Va.; stepsons, Scott, Michael, and David Duvall; granddaughter, Autumn Duvall; and many friends including his much loved dogs, Cody and Lucy Brown; and his napping buddies the cats, Where-da-Baby, Baby Girl, Tyler and Jen-Jen. There will be a memorial service at the American Legion Post #243 in Hurlock at 2 p.m. on Sun., Apr. 28, 2013. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge MD 21613. The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
