CAMBRIDGE – Colonel Richardson High School beat Cambridge-South Dorchester for the second straight year on Friday, taking the 1A North title. The Colonels earned the 25-19 win in overtime, during the Vikings’ Homecoming game.
Things looked promising early for the home team, when Darren Belizaire ran for a 49-yard touchdown in the first minute of the game. Another C-SD trip to the end zone and two failed extra points made it 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.
But the visitors got on the board right away in the second period, when senior running back Camron Gondeck broke free for a 19-yard TD. The Colonels’ Derrick Mitchell also scored in the second quarter, and after C-SD answered with a touchdown of their own, Carter Turbitt returned the kickoff for a score.
That left the score at 19-19 through the scoreless third and fourth quarters, leading to overtime. According to Bayside Athletic Conference rules, following a coin toss, C-SD got the ball at the Colonels’ 10-yard line, with four downs to attempt a score. Both teams would have at least one possession.
Three plays failed to get the Vikings into the end zone, and a field goal attempt was blocked. That turned the ball over to Colonel Richardson, who also started on the same 10-yard line.
The first play picked up 5 yards, and on second down, the visitors got 4 yards to the 1. Gondeck did the rest on third and goal, ending the game with a win for the Colonels, whose record is now 6-2, while the Vikings fell to 4-4.
On Friday, C-SD will play their final regular-season game at home, welcoming rivals Easton, whose record is 6-2. They have scored 271 points and allowed 168. They lost to Stephen Decatur on Oct. 22, 37-34.
Game time Friday is 6 p.m.
