Members of Cambridge MultiSport Club showed their love for the bay during the Heart of the Chesapeake Bike Tour on Saturday. The tour benefited the Dorchester Family YMCA.

CAMBRIDGE – There was lots of love at the Heart of the Chesapeake Bike Tour on Saturday, as friends and families hit the roads to benefit the Dorchester Family YMCA. The event was a bit different from the many cycling courses that take place in the county, as this was not a race, but rather a chance for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to take a relatively leisurely spin through Dorchester.

The tour offered cyclists three choices: a 64.6 mile metric century, a 31.9 mile course, and an 8.9-mile family ride.

“Proceeds from the Heart of the Chesapeake Bike Tour will support the Y in two meaningful ways - the Bob Brannock Endowment Fund, designed to ensure that the Y is able to maintain our important commitment to our community in the decades to come, and the Y’s Scholarship Fund which supports the immediate needs of individuals, children and families in our community who need the services and support of the YMCA,” a statement on the Y’s website said.

Members of the Cambridge MultiSport Club were among the many who enjoyed their time together on the twisting, rural roads of the county. There was “lots of beautiful scenery and wildlife,” club rider Debbie Cornwell said on social media, adding that she and her friends not only stopped at historic sites along the way, but even found time to rescue a wayward turtle from the traffic.

“The Heart of the Chesapeake Bike Tour 2017 sends a big thank you to all the riders who participated, as well as to all our amazing volunteers. The tour was a huge success and we are humbled and grateful for all the support we received,” a statement from the tour said. “We were awed by the number of cyclists who came to Cambridge to help us support our mission of funding the Bob Brannock Endowment Fund at the Dorchester County YMCA. We hope you enjoyed your ride and found the scenery as beautiful as we do.”
