Harvey R. Coleman, 81

BALTIMORE - On Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, Harvey R. Coleman, age 81, a nationally known real estate executive, developer and investor, who lived in Cambridge for 11 years through 1999, died at Gilchrist Hospice of complications of Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Harvey was born in Washington, D.C., and attended their public schools and graduated from George Washington University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He served as a radio officer in the Merchant Marines during World War II and also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, primarily in the Signal Corps Detachment at the White House during the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations. He was formerly a member of the Congressional and Kenwood Country Clubs in Montgomery County; the Cambridge Yacht Club and the Cambridge Country Club, Cambridge; the Valley Country Club, Timonium; and was past president of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club in Washington, D.C. His 35 year career in real estate led him to develop large scale commercial, office and multi family projects in over 20 states and metropolitan Washington, D.C. For the 8 years prior to his retirement in 1988, he was partner and officer in First Equities Corporation, Atlanta, Ga. He is survived by his wife, Charmie M. Coleman; his daughter, Lauren C. Swanson of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his son, Thomas R. Coleman of Bensalem, Pa.; his stepdaughters, Bonita W. Hale of Glen Arm, and Charmie W. Flora of Townson; three sisters, Julia W. Wood, Linda W. White, and Martha W. Tappen, all of Montgomery County; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Harvey's life is being planned for a future date. Arrangements by Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium.
