COLUMBIA - Guy R. Smith, 80, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Jan. 22, 2008.

He was born in Hurlock on June 22, 1927 to the late Marion C. Smith and Jessie L. Smith. From 1945 to 1947, he served in the Merchant Marines. He graduated from Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, in 1950 with a bachelor's degree and 2nd Lt. Bars in the ROTC. In Oct. 1950, he was called to active duty and trained at Ft. Breckenridge, Ky., and Ft. Benning, Ga. He was ordered to active duty in Korea where he served from July, 1951 to June 1952. Before leaving for Korea, he married Peggy Ann Timmons of Bishopville in July, 1951. In Korea, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for his combat service as a platoon leader in places like Heartbreak Ridge, Old Baldy, and the Punchbowl.

Mr. Smith received his master's degree in education from the University of Maryland. In Montgomery County, he taught at Richard Montgomery High School; served as assistant principal at Broome Jr. High and Gaithersburg Jr. High schools; and was principal at Parkland Jr. High and Key Jr. High schools.

After retirement in 1980, he and Peg traveled throughout Canada and Europe, as well as visiting all of the USA States.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peg; daughter, Laura E. Smith; son, Michael B. Smith; and grandson, Logan C. Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in honor of Guy R. Smith be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Burial will be at the East New Market Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
