CAMBRIDGE — The Grand National Waterfowl Educational Trust (GNWET) announced it has awarded scholarships to four Dorchester County graduating seniors, in addition to renewing seven scholarships for existing recipients, all for the 2016-2017 school year. The amount of each scholarship is $1,000 and is renewable each year, up to four years, as long as the students meet basic criteria of a 3.0 grade point average. GNWET Chairman Donald Reise said, “We are proud and delighted to continue our long-standing history of assisting deserving young men and women from the County in their pursuit of higher education. All of the applicants this year were extremely qualified and made the selection process very difficult.” According to Mr. Reise, the GNWET has now awarded over $220,000 in scholarships to over 200 students since the program was established in 1987. The two recipients from Cambridge-South Dorchester were twin brothers, Patrick and James Geleta, who will be attending University of Maryland at College Park. Both were accepted into the engineering program. Two other candidates were chosen from North Dorchester High School. Lindsey Corkran will also be attending the University of Maryland at College Park, majoring in Molecular Biology with a goal of medical research. Erin Freeman will be attending Salisbury University with a focus on biology and animal care. All four recipients were the guests of the Trust at a luncheon reception at the Cambridge Yacht Club on May 18. They were congratulated on their fantastic accomplishments, including scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities, and community service. Dave Bromwell, principal of C-SD High School also congratulated the students, and thanked the GNWET for its continued support of local students in awarding these scholarships. Following the luncheon, the students and Trustees assembled at the GNWA Goose Monument at Sailwinds Park East near the State/County Visitors Center for photos, and where Mr. Reise explained the history and significance of the monument. Current board members of the GNWET are Don Reise, chairman; Gordy Jones Sr., secretary; Chuck Ireland, treasusrer; Jim Benjamin, Millie Gormley, Wes Jones, Anne McAnulty, Phil Roath, and Dickie Swann.
