CAMBRIDGE — A group of German college students spent last week touring businesses in Dorchester County, in an ongoing exchange program between Dorchester County and our “sister” county of Dueren, Germany. The students and a supervisor are selected to continue their studies by looking at the American way, and in this case, the Dorchester County way of conducting business. The German intern program has been active from Dueren County for seven years. A supervisor as well as 4-6 interns are chosen from Dueren county administration from all the college students participating in their programs. Dueren County pays their way over to Dorchester as a reward for excellent work to the best students and they participate in the weeklong program we arrange here for them. This year the supervisor is Elisa Nierbeck who was previously a student in 2015. Two banking students, Tom Schmidt and Merve Soylu, spent part of their week interning at both 1880 bank and Provident State Bank. Two county administrative students, Jennifer Meuter and Rene Druschke, interned at Dorchester County Administrative offices with Jeremy Goldman, county office manager; Jeff Trice from Economic Development; Brian Soper from Environmental Planning and Ashlie Dyoutt from Emergency services, as well as Mike Spears and Bob Willey in the Department of Finance. Health and social service students Julia Fiebiger and David Mueller, interned with Clara Savage, Special Projects coordinator at Dorchester County Department of Social Services, and with Mary Handley at Delmarva Community Services. The students took an extensive tour of the county and went to the visitor’s Center, Lighthouse, GKD, Harriet Tubman National Historical park, Blackwater Wildlife refuge as well as many restaurants and markets in the area.
