Special to Dorchester Banner/Ellen HigginsAbove: Award of Design Excellence, “Snack in the Garden” Tray Design by Faye Phillips.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE — “The Potting Shed” a Standard Flower Show was presented by the Dorchester Garden Club on May 25. It was staged at Immanuel Church of Christ in Cambridge. The show was judged by 12 National Garden Club accredited Judges from several counties across the state. There were 273 horticultural exhibits, 36 floral designs and 2 educational exhibits. There were many blue ribbon awards earned by club members and the following top exhibitor awards were placed:
Division I – Horticulture: Award of Horticultural Excellence (finest exhibit in the entire Horticulture Division): Kathy Miller; Arboreal Award (highest scoring exhibit in Broadleaf Evergreens): Faye Phillips; Arboreal Award (highest scoring exhibit in Flowering Shrub): Beverly Shelly; Award of Merit (highest scoring exhibit in Rosa): Patti Hopkins; Award of Merit (highest scoring exhibit in Hosta): Susan Middleton, Award of Merit (highest scoring exhibit in Herbs): Kathy Miller; Award of Merit (highest scoring exhibit in Flowering Perennials): Kathy Miller; Award of Merit (highest scoring exhibit in Foliage Perennials): Faye Phillips; Grower’s Choice Award (highest scoring exhibit in the Combination Plantings section): Susan Middleton; Collector’s Showcase Award (highest scoring exhibit in the Displays section): Susan Middleton; Sweepstakes Award (most blue ribbons in Division I): Susan Middleton.
Division II – Design Award of Design Excellence (highest scoring exhibit in the entire Design Division): Faye Phillips; Designer’s Choice Award (highest scoring exhibit in which exhibitor has complete freedom to choose plant material and other components): Ellen Rindfuss; Petite Award (highest scoring exhibit of a Miniature or Small design): Faye Phillips; Table Artistry Award (highest scoring exhibit of a Functional or Exhibition Table Design): Faye Phillips; Sweepstakes Award (most blue ribbons in Division II): Faye Phillips; Show Chairman’s Award (awarded for most creative use of color in a design): Sandy Lucas.
Division III – Special Exhibits Educational Top Exhibitor Award: Landscaping with Pots, presented by Mowbray’s Garden Center; Award of Appreciation: “Celebrating 85 Years of Flowers, Friends, and Community Service”: Mary Jo Papin. The creative and colorful themed staging of “The Potting Shed” was seen throughout the show through signage and displays. The Dorchester Garden Club conducts Standard Flower Shows every two years in accordance with standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) to educate club members and the viewing public, stimulate interest in horticulture and floral design, provide an outlet for creative expression, and to convey to the community the objectives of NGC. This year’s show was well attended by club members and the general public.
