CAMBRIDGE — Working with what was easily accessible and affordable, has been the credo of Dorchester families for generations upon generations — hundreds of years. It seems that has not really changed very much. The Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester has been offering Heritage Studios in 2016, which have been very well received and attended. The early offerings have focused on traditional crafts — namely paper and felt making. While these crafts were traditionally done out of necessity, now these activities represent so much more. The act of manufacturing things that we normally purchase “ready made,” elevates the item (note card, slippers, etc.) to an experience and a skill.  To make something is to create, or to be creative. When a person plies a new skill, they are experimenting, to a certain extent. And there is something very fulfilling in that anticipation and experimentation. On April 16, from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Master Gardener and professional floral designer Jeanne Bernard will lead a workshop that will teach how to design and create stunning flower arrangements with very little expense.  Ms. Bernard will impart different techniques in arrangement as well as flower/container preparation and much more. Attendees are asked to bring two or more bouquets of “grocery store” flowers, pruners, vases and containers for their arrangements. In addition to the bought flowers, herbs, greens and other flowers from the campus will be used. Flower Power will be held at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester, 1003 Greenway Drive in East Cambridge. Cost for the workshop is $15 for DCHS members, $20 for nonmembers and preregistration is required. There will be an additional nominal fee for provided materials. To register, call 410-228-7953 or e-mail dchs@verizon.net.
