The First Shot Mentored Deer Hunt will introduce first time adult hunters (18 and older) that do not otherwise have the skill set or knowledge to hunt deer on their own.

Mentees will learn to hunt with skilled veteran hunters. Space is limited and participants will be selected via random lottery. Mentees will be notified via phone and email if they have been selected for the hunt by Sept. 22. Only those selected will be notified.

No experience is necessary to participate in this event including Hunter Education or a current hunting license. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources offers an apprentice hunting license, which can be obtained and used for one hunting season. All applications will be reviewed for acceptance into the program.

If selected, mentees will be notified and will be required to obtain a valid Maryland Hunting License or Apprentice License within three days of acceptance into the program. If selected, mentees will be required to participate in a “Virtual Orientation” on Oct. 13, and participate in the hunt on Oct. 29 or 30. There is no cost to participate in this event.

Applicants are asked to answer all questions as honestly and as detailed as possible. Submitting an application does not automatically enroll them in the program. Applications will be kept confidential and only be used for administrative purposes.

Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, they will be following all COVID-19 safe operating practices and all mandates from the CDC and the governor’s office. There will be no group in-person component associated with this event. Officials implore that all interactions between the mentor/mentee pairings follow all safe operating practices. In order to participate in the hunt, you will need to be accompanied by your mentor so if you are not comfortable with any outside interaction this event is not going to be appropriate for you.
