EASTON – ShoreRivers and Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake (IPC) will host a Faithful Stewards Action Social on May 17 from 4:30-7 p.m. at Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church, 425 High St. in Cambridge. The mission of the evening is to connect Dorchester County congregations with community organizations that need volunteer help. Maryland Senator Addie Eckardt will open the evening with remarks on the power of the faith community working to better the lives of their neighbors in Delmarva. Attendees will move around the room meeting various organizations and learning how their congregation can support existing community efforts. Organizations will include Habitat for Humanity Choptank, Salvation Army, and Cambridge Community Gardens, to name a few. Congregation attendees will be able to identify groups they wish to engage with following the event. The Rev. James Whitaker of Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church will close the evening with a prayer. The hosts of the event, ShoreRivers and IPC, are two organizations dedicated to restoring clean rivers for all. Their partnership is funded by Chesapeake Bay Trust and is focused on spreading the message of “creation care” — the idea that caring for each other and our planet is a fundamental principle of all faith traditions. The event will highlight community action of all kinds, including human health and social justice nonprofits. Suzanne Sullivan, program coordinator for ShoreRivers, noted that, “Collaborating with congregations has been an incredible opportunity to meet motivated and compassionate people who are ready to work for a better community.” Through their partnership, ShoreRivers and IPC have worked with St. Luke United Methodist Church, Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church, and Old Trinity Church to plant trees on their grounds to restore clean air and clean water in the community. The groups hope to spread the message of community action in Cambridge, and warmly invite other social-action organizations to join in the event. “We continue to be truly inspired at how these congregations have taken the lead in being faithful stewards of the Chesapeake Bay and their community,” said IPC Executive Director Jodi Rose.
