CAMBRIDGE — Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care celebrated 30 years in business with a ribbon cutting opening Evelyn’s Soda Shoppe. The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce scissors were wielded by the Pleasant Thoughts Editor and “Soda Jerk” Andrew Todd.

While visitors drank mini-size cans of Coke and ate miniature drum sticks, some visitors pushed all the right buttons on the revitalized jukebox to play their favorite 50s song. Senator Addie Eckard moving with the 50s rhythm observed “This atmosphere certainly stimulates memories.”

This room was originally designated as Evelyn’s room 30 years ago, to acknowledge all of her work to bring this home for Pleasant Day to fruition. Her son Rodney Robinson and daughter Diane Robinson Abbott were on hand and exclaimed that “Mom is looking down and smiling.”

Pleasant Day participants have watched Evelyn’s room evolve one day at a time into Evelyn’s Soda Shoppe. It was only fair that the participants had their own private ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. with Missy LeCompte and Soda Jerk Andrew Todd who with lots of help from friends and staff made this Soda Shoppe a reality.

Chris Condon redid Jackie’s antique ice cream chairs, including rust removal, painting and reupholstering. Jen Mascio-Schrantz did curtains and decorating. Missy and Roz lettered each soda jerk hat so that everyone could wear an Evelyn’s Soda Shoppe hat.

Andrew’s father lent the tools to build the bar. The booths and tables were donated by Tolley’s Catering and Restaurant Supplies and the Dorchester Historical Society donated the jukebox which Andrew patiently reworked into a shiny working juke box.

It takes a community to make a dream into a reality. Jackie Vickers, executive director of Pleasant Day says “An anonymous donor in August contacted us that she had directed the interest payment from her IRS be donated directly to Pleasant Day to be used as needed. This pretty much covered the cost of the Soda Shoppe renovations.
