Ernest Bryan Hanmer

CAMBRIDGE - Ernest Bryan Hanmer died March 9th, 2014 of natural causes. Born March 19th, 1928 in Chicago, Ill., Ernie grew up in Los Angeles, Cali. and Cleveland, Ohio attending Case Western Reserve University and Wittenberg College. After his junior year he married Lois Klar of Arcanum, Ohio in 1949. They completed their senior years at Wittenberg together and graduated in 1950 then moved to Cleveland. Lois passed away in 1977. He began a 30 year career as a manufacturer's representative in 1962, founding his own firm in 1965, and retiring in 1992. In 1981, Ernie married Nancy Kirlik in Bay Village, Ohio. He began a life long adventure in sailing and sail racing as a child in Bay Village. As a 50 year skipper/owner of 12 Star Class racing yachts, Ernie was a competitor in many national and international regattas including Star Class World Championships. Early in his sailing life, he became a protest committee judge at Cleveland Yachting Club where he was a member for more than 50 years. He became an international judge for 20 years including seven world championships. He was a life member of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association and served as International Secretary for 10 years. He and Nancy moved to Cambridge, Md. in 1994 where he was active in the Dorchester Skipjack Committee and was a Coast Guard licensed Captain of the "Nathan of Dorchester", a historical sailing skipjack. He was also a member of the Cambridge Sail and Power Squadron and achieved the highest rank of senior navigator and taught many of their boating courses including Celestial Navigation. He was also a docent at the James B. Richardson Maritime Museum in Cambridge. Ernie enjoyed many weeks at the family summer home in Fenwick Island, Del. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lois and his daughter Louise. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Nancy Hanmer and his daughter Amelia of Manchester, N.H.; three step children, Ann Friedman, Alex Kirlik and Kathleen Rumfola; one granddaughter and five stepgrandsons. In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board for use in training future doctors in medical schools. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Ernie's life on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Cambridge Yachting Club.
