The art work of two Eastern Shore artists, Fran Saunders and Cal Jackson, have been selected for the new D/E Gallery at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. The new D and E concourse enables passengers to move between international and domestic flights, within a secured area.

A distinguished five-member jury, led by Maryland’s First Lady Yumi Hogan, reviewed 580 submissions from across the region. Twenty-eight pieces were selected for displays in the new gallery.

For the next several years the 28 pieces will be displayed in the new gallery in four rotating exhibits. Each rotation will be displayed for six months at a time.

Fran’s lifelong love of photography began in childhood in her native New York, and she still remembers her first Kodak Brownie camera with great fondness. Over the years, she has taken photo workshops, online courses, and is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, ever striving to learn new techniques and hone her skills.

There are two things in art that move Fran: those subjects that touch her heart and those that excite her senses. She is, therefore, drawn to images that show emotions and those that make her feel as if she’d been touched. On the one hand, she loves to photograph human and animal expressions that reveal something about the way the subjects are feeling or thinking. On the other, her images tend toward texture shots, those that show detail, surface patterns and depth. Fran is also always looking for new ways to process her images and finds that by manipulating images she can display her best creativity. Therefore, many of her images resemble paintings rather than photographs.

Since 2007, her images have received over 35 awards and honors from venues such as the Ward Foundation, the Maryland Federation of Art and Chesapeake College, in addition to various local arts councils. She has exhibited work at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, the Biggs Museum in Delaware, Women in Photography International in Los Angeles and several galleries in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.

Fran is a member of the Photographic Society of America and the North American Nature Photographers Association. She belongs to the Tidewater, Baywater, Ocean Pines and Coastal Camera Clubs, and participates in the Wednesday Morning Artists group. Fran currently exhibits at the Main Street Gallery and the Dorchester Center for the Arts in Cambridge, Le Hatchery Galleria in Easton, and the Candleberry Gallery in St. Michaels. Fran and her husband are retired and live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Cambridge.

Cal Jackson’s passion for art began as a child growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa. After retiring from careers as a government auditor and Chief Financial Officer of a tech company, Cal moved to Easton where he continues to refine his photographic skills and expand his portfolio of nature-inspired scenes. An itinerant traveler, his work has sent him to dozens of locations in the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe and Pacific Islands.

Cal had two pieces: Log Canoe Race and Daily Catch selected for display in the new D/E Gallery. Cal was also selected as a finalist in the 2015 Nikonians’ International photography competition. His work has been displayed throughout Delmarva and at numerous art exhibitions. His many awards include the Silver Heron (Kent Island federation of Arts) and Best representation of the Eastern Shore (Heron Point Annual Open Juried Show). He is a member of the Tidewater Camera Club, Wednesday Morning Artist and Friday Morning Artist. Cal currently exhibits at The Candleberry Gallery in St. Michaels, and Le Hatchery in Easton.
