In back from the left are ND Athletic Director Dave Morrissette, Destiny Lane and award sponsor Steven Booth of Jimmy and Sooks restaurant.[/caption] SHILOH – North Dorchester High School has a new batch of top students, after October’s athletes of the month were named on Oct. 24. “Coaches sent in your names, and the athletic boosters voted,” Athletic Director Dave Morrissette told the assembled students as he announced the recognition. Junior varsity/underclassmen winners received movie passes from Regal Cinemas, while varsity winners got gift cards from Jimmy and Sooks restaurant. Students are chosen based not only on their superior performance in sports, but also on the basis of their academic achievements and citizenship. A boy and girl are chosen in both varsity and JV categories. Varsity Cole Morrissette, Golf — “Varsity golf would like to nominate Cole Morrissette,” a statement from the school said. “Cole has been a steady Number 1 for our golf team all season and in past seasons.” Cole has placed as highly as fourth and eighth of 50 golfers in two matches. He earned a Third Team/Honorable Mention to make the Bayside Team. He will represent North Dorchester as a senior all-star for the North vs. South senior event in Ocean City. “He has been an asset in helping to develop our younger players as well, and is always willing to do anything asked of him.” Destiny Lane, Soccer — Destiny is senior this year, and is showing younger players how it’s done — she hasn’t missed a single practice since tryouts on Aug. 8. “Destiny is in the Honor Society, which is not a surprise, if she works as hard in the classroom as she does on the field,” the statement said. “Pep talks and cheers are two of her strong suits as well. She always has something positive to say to get the team going before games and at the end of every practice.” Her maturity has gained the respect of underclassmen, who look up to her, especially since she told them she can’t wait to come back and cheer them on after she graduates. “Her school spirit and always-smiling attitude has helped us stay united as a team this year.” JV/Underclassmen Adam Ray, Cross Country — Adam is a freshman on the running team, and has already taken on a leadership role, especially among the other ninth graders. “He has been our Number 1 runner in most races and puts in a lot of hard work,” the statement said. His personal record time is 18:48, fast indeed, even more so for a rookie. “He is a terrific athlete, and we are excited to see what the next four years brings him.” Daizja Smith, Unified Tennis — Daizja is a Special Olympics athlete who has made tremendous improvements since her first game last year, her coach said. “She serves the ball well, moves around the court well, always shows up for practice and matches, and gives 100 percent in all aspects,” the statement said. “She and her partner won their match against Colonel Richardson this year, with the help of Daizja’s hard work.”
