HURLOCK — December Athletes of the Month have been announced by Dave Morrissette, the school’s athletic director.
The honors go to students who not only are successful in their sports, but also in the classroom. Their leadership qualities and sense of citizenship are also taken into account.
Receiving the varsity awards, sponsored by Olive Garden, are junior Ledger Bates and sophomore Curstin Carpenter.
Ledger, a wrestler, recently competed in the Andy Perez Tournament at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, taking home third place and demonstrating leadership of the team.
Curstin, a captain on the girls’ basketball team, is also a leader both on and off the court. She is one of the team’s top rebounders and is known for her consistent work ethic.
The junior varsity awards, sponsored by Regal Cinemas, go to cheerleader Julia Dyer and wrestler Kaden Handte.
Julia, a freshman, is known for her tenacity and fearlessness. Her coach says, “She has advanced faster and farther than any first-year flyer we’ve ever had on the team.”
Sophomore Kaden wrestles up a weight class by 15 pounds and has shown the other boys what can be done when you make good food choices and stay active, having lost 40 pounds in the past year.
