CAMBRIDGE - Dr. Carl S. Barham has received the MAMCD Lifetime Achievement Award in Multicultural Counseling. The award is given by the Maryland Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development to an individual who has made sustained, exceptional, and life-long accomplishments and contributions in the field of multicultural counseling.
Dr. Barham has dedicated his profession to the core values and beliefs over the course of his career as a multicultural therapist, consultant, supervisor, educator, entrepreneur, adjunct professor, psychologist, spiritual advisor, family man, and mentor. As one of the founding members of MAMCD, he is a pioneer in the multicultural counseling profession. He has been a life-long member since its inception and served as its second president.
Dr. Barham received a Master of Education Degree and an Advanced Graduate Specialist Diploma in Counseling from University of Maryland in 1969. He also received a Doctor of Education Degree from Nova University in 1976. Certifications include Licensed Clinical Professional Counseling (LCPC), National Certified Counselor (NCC), National Certified School Counselor (NCSC), Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (NBCCH) and Professional Photography credentials.
Dr. Barham is Second Founding President of the Maryland Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development. He was the former President of the Institute of Community Development that sponsored the Maryland Hypertension Research Project on Black Churches. Promoter, Collector and Presenter of the Historical Freedom Shrine Story that highlights the 40,000 pound Maryland Monument for Voter Reform. Freedom is the Right to Vote.
Dr. Barham is a noted author with many publications, including the co-authored book entitled, Are Your Affairs in Order? Guidelines to Assist You.
Presently, Dr. Barham is a licensed psychotherapist, professional educator and consultant. He is a retired principal from the Prince George’s County Maryland Public School System. His broad professional career and experiences include working as a public school teacher, counselor, human relation trainer, elementary principal, high school vice principal, pupil personal worker, psychologist, a licensed insurance agent and financial planner.
He is the Executive Director of Counseling and Personal Empowerment Services (CPES), located in Columbia, Maryland. In this organization, the counseling approach used for addressing mental health challenges is from a holistic perspective.
Dr. Barham was a former adjunct college professor, who taught graduate studies at Bowie State University, Antioch College, and McDaniel College, formerly Western Maryland College. Dr. Barham’s passionate hobby is professional art photography.
